Seasonic super tornado please help

When this 300 watt Super Tornado isn't making a high pitched squeal/humming sound, I love it. But I've done things such as unplug my CPU fan (the only other fan in the machine) and listened, and the high pitched noise is definitely coming from this Seasonic psu.

Questions: with such a quiet fan, is it normal to hear a high pitched noise from these Seasonic units? Did I just get a bad unit, so I should RMA exchange it? Or should I go with the Antec TruePower which I bought at CompUSA but I haven't openned because I'd rather try another Seasonic if I can be pretty sure that not all the Super Tornados are like this?
 
breifly stick a pencil in the fan and see if it is indeed the fan or the supply itself making the noise
 
Thanks for this suggestion. I did the pencil thing and it is not the fan making the noise- it is the electronics or something in the PSU making the noise. The fan is damn near silent. So what does this lead you to conclude?
 
well, I'll let our resident Electrical Engineer answer that one, as he actually designs switch mode power supplies

They dunk the transformers/inductors used in power supplies into varnish during manufacture, to hold the windings in place. Every once in a while a part won't go the full way into the potitng tank or sometimes a manufacturer will forget entirely... the loose windings and loose transformer core will "dance around" a bit and cause noise.

This doesn't cause any reliability problems, but it can be annoying as fuck.

Does the sound change depending on what you're doing on your computer? if so, this is your problem.

so Id say if its really annoying RMA
but in the mean time its a better supply than that oldschool Antec
 
That's probably it. I'll RMA exchange. I am concerned that all the units in the batch might have the same problem, reasoning that the power supplies are not dipped individually into the varnish, but rather as a group. True what you say in your last sentence. Thanks very much for the help.
 
Further investigation revealed that the sound was coming from the hard drive!
The hard drive must have been damaged when the old power supply failed.
My fault, because the power supply was giving me warnings of failure for several days. There was time to buy and new one to avoid what happened.
Now I need to reinstall everything onto a new harddrive.
Godamn and other expletives such as Fornicator With Swine!
