SeaSonic S12-600 Failure

One of my friends asked me which PSU to buy, and Ive seen glowing praise for the SeaSonic S12-600 on the forums. So i told him to get that one, He got it. ran fine for a week, then went POP. the PSU just died on him. Anyone else have a problem with the PSU. I didnt want to beleive some of the egg reviews, but now im leaning to agree with them. Maybe not as great Q as some of hte other big brands. The PSU was 6 days old. it had replaced his Enermax 550 watt thats ran for 4 years. Luckly the PSU didnt take his system with it. He put in another PSU and his system fried up.. Just wanted to give eveyrone a heads up, and mabye we should watch out on this PSU

A good supply doesn't take anything with it when it goes

Thank god for that. or it woudl have been a very costly PSU death. Hopefully Seasonic will take care of my friend with this since its only been 6 days since he bought it.

He finally talked to Seasonic about his power supply. They told him he has 2 options only. Either A. return it to them and they will replace it with a reconditioned PSU, or return it to newegg for repair, and most likely get one of their reconditioned PSUs. They also woudlnt do anything about shipping even though it died just 6 days after he got it, So more or less he will lose the rebate that was on teh PSU, cause its goign to cost him most of it when he ships it back. I was hoping they would help him out more, since it was brand new.

Have your friend contact Newegg and explain the situation ASAP. Their customer service may be able to take care of everything, especially since the failure was within a week of purchase.

But I keep seeing posts discussing the opposite. Several posts have appeared recently where folk say the enermax units don't have enough power to overclock their CPU/graphics card at the same time. Others state that their Seasonic died shortly after purchase.


Newegg reviews generally echo these few negatives....

HOWEVER

I've yet to read a bad review about Xclio - nothing but positive. That's why I decided to go with an Xclio here recently over the Enermax or Seasonic PSU.

I've also heard a lot LESS bad things about OCZ power supplies than Enermax or Seasonic....


Just an observation....

FI: when I see 5 out of 5 stars at newegg and EVERY single review positive on the Xclio 450 BL, and 4 out of 5 stars overall on the seasonic and liberty PSU's. Just makes me wonder if the quality is really as high as some of this boards biggest thread posters proclaim. Shoot for that matter, the Thermaltake 430 watt PSU that's onsale for 30 bucks a good portion of the time -that most of the die hard forum members say is absolute crap, has 5 out of 5 stars overall on newegg, and not very many negatives at all.

Now if one considers that most people won't post a review if their product is great, but will post a review if thier product fails or is crappy. Then the overwhelming positive numbers on the Xclio and Thermaltake are even more impressive. For around 40-50 bucks shipped, both of these PSU's seem to me like they would fit most PC's quite well. (the Xclio being the better PSU, obviously)

A few people having units die after recieving them can be a number of things (shipping, user handling/abusing, etc).......but I have seen no evidence of a widespread issue on Seasonics.

NewEgg reviews are beyond worthless for a numebr of reasons.

1) They pick the reviews they let through.

Depends on where the failure is. Anytime a FET blows up, power supply, motherboard, video card, etc. it can, and often will, blow up whatever it's powering.

I still stand behind the TWV500 and the TR2 units are CWT's and are also have properly spec'd rails.

How often do you see FET's fail on a quality psu?

It doesn't happen often, but Toshiba (the brand FET that 99% of manufacturers seem to use) isn't perfect. Nobody is. I've had it happen with Thermaltakes, Antecs and FSP's. Ironically, the only time I've had Powmax and Aspires blow up on the DC end, the FET didn't actually fry. But I did have a Powmax fry on the AC end and it took out everything plugged into the same electrical outlet. That was interesting.

I missed the $30 part. Probably subconsciously because I don't think there's anyone selling TT's for $30.. even the 430W.
