Has anyone had any experience with getting search engine optimizations done for a website? Any experience with the pricing, subscription levels, weighting of hit results, etc. that come from SEO?

I'm looking for something more than just using "meta" tags in the HTML header and a robots.txt file, and have some customers that are willing to pay to get a higher chance of being at the top of search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, etc.

I've been digging for a while through Google's site regarding this, but as of writing this I haven't seen anything conclusive that provides specifics on my questions above. I've found a lot of companies that advertise that they can do the work, but it seems like they are just a middle-man between the client and the search engine itself.

If anyone has any links, advice, or suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it !!!

So am I to understand that SEO is a middle-man business, where either I or another company would have to provide routine maintenance on modifying sites to get higher search results? Or is there a method where my client would pay $xxx per month/year to get a very certain chance of being shown within the top 20 results for a particular search?

Ideally I'd like to not spend my time after completing the web app for my client constantly doing search optimizations, and having a flat rate paid toward a search engine itself (Google, Yahoo, etc.) instead of a middle-man makes sense to me. If I'm not understanding this correctly, then please let me know!
 
So yes, basically SEO is an ongoing process since the wbe is constantly changing. How often you have to update will depend greatly on how popular the terms you're trying to rank highly for are. Practically you'd probably need to make even just a few changes every couple of month as search engines can put some weight on the relative age of content. I believe typically you pay a contract for say about a year to have one or more sites optimized for a set of terms on different search engines. I don't know if there's sla's or anything regarding a guranteed rank, probably varies by vendor.
 
There are no guarantees in SEO. Anyone who offers guaranteed results is either scamming you, or the results they guarantee will be for search terms that are either irrelevant or that no one would use in the first place.

These days, SEO is not enough. Commercial sites also typically use SEM (search engine marketing), such as PPC (pay per click) campaigns like google's adwords.

If you want a good laugh, ask an SEO for a quote on what it would take to make your site rank #1 for a term like viagra. :p

This is true. Part of my job is SEO on various popular websites, such as Inkjetcartridges.com - we're high up on many keyword searches involving printer brand/models and 'ink'.

All of the business for that site comes from Google and they process approximately 300 orders per day.

But, it's ongoing - I'm on a 5 year contract with them.

Does Google (or Yahoo, MSN, etc.) have a subscription plan for automatically putting a higher priority on your site for searches, such as "For $xx per month, we'll guarantee that you'll be within the top xx results for searches on the word ___"? Since you are on a 5 yeear maintenance contract, I'm assuming that the answer is "no", but I'd still like to hear your thoughts on this (or anyone else's thoughts on this matter).
 
AFAIK neither google nor yahoo do this. googles stance is that they let the content of the site determine the ranking as this will provide the most relevant results to the user. Pay per click ads are reserved for the sidebar.
