Seagate to buy Maxtor!

Sounds like a good thing to me. My only gripe is that less competition = Higher prices.

GOOD!!!

I hate Maxtor, I've had over a dozen drives go bad on me. I'll never buy one again. Maybe Seagate can actually make Maxtor drives decent. I'll pay a higher price for a drive that will last me over a year.

why oh why maxtor... they should have bought western digital... and just shut it down.... of the 2... i'de rather see maxtor stay compitition...

not that maxtors are *great*... but WD's sucks something serious "Caviar exceptionally the finest".... my ass.. they where great for makeing door stops.... thats about it

lets just hope that seagates maintain there relyability... they may not be the fastest hourse in the race... but there most likely to finish the race... theres a reason sun only uses seagates in there servers...

LOL Say what? I've been running nothing but Western Digital drives for the past 11 years and the only drive I had any problems with was in a machine with a power supply that decided it wanted to overvolt sporadically. However, I've watched plenty of Maxtors connect to the great drive interface in the sky.

This could be quite interesting, though... We'll see what happens.

Funny, I feel the exact opposite. I think Maxtor drives "suck something serious" and WD makes much better drives. I put Seagate drives on the same tier as WD, maybe slightly higher due to the 5-year warranty.

It will be interesting to see if Seagate keeps the Maxtor brand going or if they just absorb Maxtor to eliminate a competitor and kill off the Maxtor brand name. IIRC, when Maxtor bought out Quantum, their line went to hell in a handbasket...

*sniff* I hope that Seagate doesn't kill the Atlas line out of pride...anybody with the sense to look at realistic benchmarks knows that the Atlas is a much better performer than the Cheetah, regardless of market segment. Of course you guys are going to say Seagate is more "reliable," and while Seagate is the gold standard for mechanical hard disk reliability, the truth is that Maxtor and Fujitsu make equally capable SCSI drives. The Atlas 10K V and 15K II are both excellent drives that shouldn't be lost. Also, as others have pointed out, Seagate's firmware team needs some help. Maxtor has been the only ATA drive maker to realize performance gains in SR's single user test suits with NCQ, as well as delivering overall solid performance. Also, Maxtor has a long established nearline presence with the MaxLine series.

Hopefully Seagate will be able to get the power consumption of Maxtor drives under control. I also smell Seagate keeping the Maxtor name around, allowing them to market products that aren't backed by Seagate's "across the board" five year warranty.

There is still plenty of competition. Both Hitachi and Samsung's storage divisions are part of huge Pacific Rim conglomerates, nad virtually immune to takeover, and we still have WD  A four horse race is much more variety than the two horse race in the CPU or video card world. Steve has already put this on the front page, you can find his thread on it (which will draw much more attention and conversation [thread=993996]here[/thread].
