Seagate ST1 1" Hard Drive

After some research, I have purchased a couple of RioCarbons with the intent to extract the 1" Hard drives to use in my digital camera, the first drive that I purchased worked fine, formatted, and gives me around 1300 High Quality JPEG's. With this success, I purchased another with the intent to do the same thing, but was not able to get the card to work. I would get an Error CF then when I attempt to format I get an Error 99. This however is not the reason I'm posting, I found later one, that after wiping the paritions on my Fedora box, that didn't work either. Then it came to my attention that the there was a firmware of 3.04 listed on the drive that did not work and none listed on the drive that did. Both of the drives work fine in the card reader, and can have files written to them, then extracted from them.

My thought is that Seagate and Rio found out about the extraction of the drives, and decided to put a stop to it. Both of the drives carry the exact same model number and P/N number. Knowing that it is just a change in firmware does it seem possible that if the non-working drive were to be flashed with the firmware that it would work again? If so, is it possible to extract the firmware from a drive to flash another?
 
Look at the Ipod Mini - Muvo 2 discussions of this same thing (the Ipod Mini has a firmware on it's CF card that prevent's it's use in a camera the Muvo 2 doesn't) I have yet to hear of a solution, as the MFG would have to make the software to flash the drive, and they don't want to do that as their customer (RIO in this case) doesn't want people doing what you are doing.
