About 3 months ago I bought a 300GB Seagate PATA drive because my DFI nf4 Ultra-D wont take my Maxtor SATA drive. Known issue, but anyway, I sent it in for RMA 3 weeks ago because it would no longer be recognized by windows and windows would constantly freeze when accessing it when it did recognize it.

I received a package 2 days ago from Seagate. Inside the box to my surprise I found a 750GB External Push Button Firewire/usb 2.0 hard drive. After considering my morals and such, I eventually contacted them. They told me to keep it for being honest about it. I ripped the drive out of its enclosure. Literally, it had some Torx Security screws and was midnight and I didn't have the bits so I played with it for 3 hours and finally got it out. Seagate Barracude 7200.10 750GB PATA hard drive. I couldn't believe it when I opened the package and saw what I saw.

Got an extra 450GB and 8MB cache for free!!! I'm loving it, now I've got 1.15TB unformatted space in my PC, just over a TB or so when its all formatted though!!!

I love seagate's rma process. Anyone else experience a similar situation? Should I have just kept it without telling them?

Honesty in this day and age is very seldom heard of especially with so many pirates of the silicon world. Stealing software, stealing music and movies, etc. Honest people are a dying breed.

Sorry but I've been corrupted long ago. So no, I would have kept it but paranoia would have eaten me alive with checking the creditcard statements to see if they billed me the extra.

If you find that you can't sleep at night, I'll take it off your hands for a nominal fee.

Thats not a bad deal. Best part of all is that they let you keep it.

I sent in my old drive first, didn't have to give them any creditcard info. I thought about selling it because I really didn't need the space. Was gonna sell it and get a 320GB-500GB drive for much much less. My 2 200GB drives are barely saturated at all. But I like being able to make disk images and the like. Having a spare copy of my data, etc.

Yeah that was my first experience with Seagate, previously I had used all Maxtor drives and I have honestly never had a Maxtor fail on me. I've owned LOTS of them too, the oldest one I've got is from my first PC build, a 40GB'er and it still runs great to this day. Bought a WD one day because it was on sale, had it fail after 3 months. Bought this Seagate and failed after 2 months. Nevertheless this was a great first experience with Seagate. Hopefully they do this good with customer service on Maxtor drives. They got my maxtor drive working on my Ultra-D by sending me an updated firmware.

I can't believe they "let" me keep it. I definitely wouldn't have paid shipping back to them, they would have had to email me shipping labels at the least. First time I've ever gotten lucky like this after reading stories on here about people recieving bonus items or better items from an RMA. Now I need to RMA my 7900GS and hope for a 7950GX2 or 2 7900GS's in return :D

You say you will never fill that much space, and then one day you say, "I need more space, pronto!"

Very true. Soon we'll be needing 8TB of space and the average game will eat 30-50GB.

Not only that, but if you rip a TV show, compress it, a 1 hour show takes up 350MB, times 10 episodes for the season, that 3.5GB(ish), and then 5 seasons, that's now 17.5GB! 17.5GB for 1 stinking show! :p Now add your movie collection...ripped music....it adds up quick :(

I haven't gotten into the multimedia pc thing yet. That's why I have no need. My 200GB OS drive has 140GB or so free. My other 200GB drive has around 100GB free it contains all music, videos, files, drivers, etc. My 750GB drive has nothing on it

Now that I've got the space though, I'm almost willing to bet that instead of making xvid dvds [my dvd player plays divx/xvid] I'll just keep em on the 750GB drive and connect the PC to the TV. Samsung 46" DLP HDTV has VGA in. Maybe I'll setup my sempron 3100+@2.5ghz, 1gb ram, 80gb hdd, radeon x1600pro pc with that 750GB drive and connect her to my TV.

Getting a little off topic in my own thread, but oh well.

I like divx/xvids so maybe I'll start up a collection.

you lucky bastard... ive got through RMA hell with seagate, and im still not finished.

about 2 months ago my 7200.10 400gig sata started dieing on me, so i started the rma on it.

2-3 weeks after i sent my drive in, they give me a 400gig Ultra ATA 7200.8.

i called up seagate and complained to them about it, they said it was a mistake and they would send me the correct drive and a claim slip for it.

the new RMA was started ton 12-20-06. it took them 1 month to locate the correct replacement drive for me. it shipped out on 1-18-07. i emailed them mulitple times and they kept saying "oh, we hope to have one located for you in the next 24hrs" it went on like that for almost 2 weeks.

now the new drive i got is ALREADY dieing. started dieing last night actually.... took less then 48hrs. now ive gotta start the whole damn process all over again.

Seems like a power issue rather than bad drives.

thats what i thought to when i got the first drive, so i went out and bought an antec 550 neo, more then enough power for my system. still get the same problems i was getting with my thermaltake 480.

Quality of the AC power in your home also can play a factor.
I'm assuming you're not using a UPS or power conditioner, right?

ya ur lucky. rma a 750 gb drive and they still didn't ship it back, and they claimed they did.

ya i know it seems odd, but the sata drives got its own rail even. the thing is getting plenty of power to it.

Yes, we are not saying it's not getting enough power, it is possible it is getting too much power.

guess i could try knocking it down a bit. i would think 2 HDs and an optical drive would probably knock it down abit.

I had some bad luck with a couple of Seagate's drives they have the best warranty and RMA support that I could have ever hoped to deal with. It was very smooth process to get everything back up and running. It's funny that you received such a very generous step up like that; I had an "upgrade" thrown my way as well (but not as impressive.) I figured they were just out of stock of the drive I was returning but who knows.

The "cleanness" of the power also plays a big part, and adding more drives won't change that. What power supply are you using? Have you checked the output voltage with a voltmeter?
