Watkins: They don't. We take their facilities, put our infrastructure in there and manufacture to their customer base -- in what will become our customer base now. They utilize a lot of the same equipment we do, but they're more capable in making perpendicular media. We obviously think we can add some technology to that.

For those that don't want to read the interview, it basically says that Maxtor itself is of no use to Seagate, but rather, the surplus money and the facilities Maxtor has is useful to Seagate.

Honesty at its finest.
 
Do you think that maxtor as a name will cease to exist, and the new drives they create will be under the seagate brand?
 
I hope no more maxtor quality hard drives are being made, everyone of them that I have had, fail within the first couple years of their lifes. For the first three Maxtors, I rma'd them in time of warranty, but was easily annoyed with the fact that they cannot be reliable past their warranty period. :mad: So in other words, I love Seagate and hope they continue to spread their seed in the computer world. :eek: hehe!!!!

My thoughts exactly... seagate uses archaic hardware, but at least the damn things work!
 
Maxtor just built a new plant in China (primarily to manufacture disk media), Seagate needed to build another manufacturing plant anyway..... problem solved.

Seagate is currently in need of more engineering staff as they have more projects (perpendicular tech anyone??) than people right now (straight from the mouth of a senior VP I know), so they absorb Maxtor's staff and equipment..... problem solved.

Seagate wants into the growing consumer market, Maxtor owns that market...... problem solved.

Seagate doesn't want Samsung to absorb Maxtor and enter the Enterprise market (or WD for that matter, but they most likely don't have the cash)...... problem solved.

This move made perfect sense for Seagate, I don't get what the deal is.

Well, any company aqcuiring another is a big deal....I don't think people are freaking out about it if thats what you are implying...it was a great move on the part of Seagate...the CEO made this very clear and the reasons why very clear.

I completely disagree. Maxtor makes some of the best performing HDs out there (far better than any Segate EIDE/SATA solutions), and I have never, ever had a Maxtor drive fail on me (knock on wood).

The only silver lining to this cloud is Maxtor drives possibly dropping in price in the retail channels and me being able to pick up a handful for a RAID-5 file server. RIP Maxtor, you will be missed....

Watkins says the Maxtor brand name has value. That's a pretty clear indication they're going to keep the name, at least in the media space.
 
May we see Seagate become a SCSI exclusive name, and Maxtor a consumer exclusive name? Or perhaps, we will see premium Seagate drives continue to carry a five year warranty, while Seagate also markets Maxtor drives that aren't held to the same standards to appeal to budget driven consumers?
 
Alittle off topic, but I remember back in the day when scsi was becoming kinda popular, my aunt had one on her comp, and I remember plugging the printer cable into the back of the scsi and ended up frying the whole computer :eek: luckily she is rich and wasn't mad at all, it gave her an excuse to upgrade.

Conner ruled once upon a time. My CFS420A still works to this day on an old 486 box with a DTC VLB Controller. .. 420mb :D

me wonders if seagate will be tossing that 5 year warranty onto maxtor drives..I doubt it.
 
I highly doubt they will release Maxtor hard drives. After mid-2006 Maxtor is gone and Seagate will eat up the market at competitive prices and still offering 5 year warranty.
