ok, i got home from work today and my computer was locked up. this hasn't happened in a long time. reboot and it doesn't detect my 120gb seagate hd. take it off the sata-pata adapter and it still doesn't work. put it in my usb enclosure (and accidentally jumper it for 32gb) and it works fine. change it to 120gb and it again works fine. i am gonna put it back in my computer tomorrow and run seatools on it, but does anyone have a clue what could be wrong with it? am i gonna just have to replace it and rma it?

Several factors have changed:
You swapped out sata cable, sata controller, and IDE-SATA controller.
To prove the controller, use another IDE device and a known good cable (the one on the HDD is NOT known good at this point) and plug it up, see if it works. If it does, appears that the IDE controller is good. Now proceed to the next device, known-good pata-sata converter, known good cable, etc etc etc etc.
PITA but its the only way to pinpoint your point of failure.

its now working as a standard pata drive. running seatools on it to see if it has any major errors. now, what do you guys recommend for a replacement drive? i'd like western digital but i'm not sure i wanna wait for newegg to get me one due to the way the drive has been acting. i want a true SATA drive, but all i have for choices are seagate and maxtor (damn crappy area).

I'd get rid of that sata-pata interface. Its like having 2 firewalls, sooner or later, stuff is going to foul up 
But you did change 3 factors when you got it working on the USB enclosure.
You are not using the sata cable, you are not using the SATA/PATA converter, nor are you using the same motherboard interface, heck, you're not even using the same power lead, nor drivers for that interface (5 now that I think about it.....)
If you want to correctly identify the problem you have got to account for all possibilities.
FWIW seagate has my vote over maxtor. Seagates have great warranties and their performance is equal/exceeds maxtor. I believe you will pay a price premium for seagate over maxtor, or thats what I see online (I dont like to retail shop for computer guts if I can possibly help it).

Yeah, buy an OEM Seagate. They are quieter, and have a 5 year warranty.

yeah well, i have to go retail to get one soon so i can either put the drive in my external enclosure or RMA it.
