I had not heard of the Kinetic line....using CAT5 instead of SATA is interesting.

Reliability usually depends on price so I am sure these use higher quality components. I am surprised that they are using different methods for the different configuration of drives because this was not always the case even if they say they do. To reduce vibration they anchor the platters on the bottom using the motor as well the top and other features including sealed top covers. The 7 platter designs would need a vastly more powerful motor as all the previous drives only had 5 platters and at 7200rpm those got very hot so I wonder about the 7 platter designs. They need to use a larger motor to drive these without over heatting. DC motors can be made to work by just pumping more current through it to drive very heavy loads using small motors but they dont last that way.

Also are these 512b or 4096 byte sectors? Thats a lot of extra space difference between the 2 of almost 10% and I wonder if they got this higher density by using advanced formats. These drives should be reliable for the most part until they ramp up for general use in a couple of years.

Remember these are only for large file access like media files and not random access of small file writes as it uses HTTP to get the data. Sata would still be needed for such things. I think the writting is on the wall that SSD's are used for data base type random access and hard drives are only for large file storage and long term storage. So forget IOPS, I would be surprised if that number goes above 100..
