Having horrible luck with these SATA drives!

First one died within 1 year. Second one was DOA. Third one died overnight after about 3 months with lots of read errors on test somehow. This PC is never moved, sits in the basement off the ground and runs cool. 5 case fans too. The other WD drive in there is a rock and has been with me for several years.

Am I simply having bad luck or are these drives subpar? I am under warranty still and almost on a first name basis with India support but jeez... What could be causing this pain? Could some incompatability be causing read errors and physicaly damage to the disks?

I have an Asus K8N-E mobo using the Nforce3 250 chipset. I have the drive using the straight SATA master #4 connector, non-raid with the Nvidia sw-ide driver... XP-Pro.

I am writing this email as a cry for advice or warning to others, depending on the outcome.

Huh, I tend to buy seagate but I'm rethinking that policy. A friend of mine went through 3 brand new ones before getting one that worked :( I've had two for less than a year with no problems so far. On the other hand, I've gone through two maxtor's in two years, never buying one again.
 
Check cables, power, etc. Also, where did you buy them from?

If the drives were as unreliable as your accounts make them out to be, the people that make them wouldn't be in business.
 
Bought the original one from NewEgg. The other 2 were more than likey refurbed from Seagate since they were replacements from Seagate support. The original drive was new though.

I'm as shocked as you regarding this and don't blame your skepticism. Take this for what it is, my story of a few failed drives. Do I sense a trend? My next drive just came in and is a Western Digital which matches my slave drive which has been running strong since before I built this PC 2 years ago. Also Segate just acquired Maxtor in december... hrmm.

I have replaced cables during this ordeal but still can't fathom how physical disk damage can occur to a stationary PC. It's not like I swing magnets and maces around it.

I am not ruling out bad luck either.

Agreed, which is why we see things like IBM selling their drive division to Hitachi after notorious items like the Deathstar.

I've had good luck with Seagates. I've heard others complain that Newegg does not ship their HDs as well as other companies (for OEM drives).

Just curious, to the OP: What kind of power supply are you running your rig with?

12v rail is always slightly over 12 but the 5v is slightly underpowered at like 4.95(ish) according to the BIOS. Could this be power?
