Seagate 500GB Questions

Anyway I went to pickup the ST3500641AS drive from BestBuy and they tried give me the Ultra ATA version so I returned it for a credit. I ordered another ST3500641AS drive and went to a different Best Buy and got the ST3500630AS with the AAK firmware made in China. I still think it is a good deal for $99.00 and I really didnt expect to get the perpendicular type drive at this price.

all and only 7200.10 and up, are perp drives, period.

Great drive for the money. Using one as the main on my pc right now.

So I decided to take advantage of price matching and picked it up at CC.
a Few days later finally have the time to set that bad boy up. use the Seagate Tools to Clone my Seagate 320 gig ata vista install onto the 500g. After the disk clone was completed and rebooted with the new drive as the master drive. And noticed the most horrendous Racket. It sounded literally as if It was the battle between Megatron and Optimus from the new movie. Clanging and Smashing. Sadly my drive is defective out of the box.
So I will have to return it tomorrow. damm it.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. Trust me, it doesn't happen very often. Strange... usually Seagate is known for their reliability but I guess anything can happen.

Trust me in 16 years of buying pc hardware that is the first defective hard drive I took home from retail.

 I can't decide whether or not to keep this drive (got an aak) or not.

What other drives are just as fast as an AAE version of this??? Am I really missing out? Whatever drive I end up with, it will be a primary drive with the operating system and all my programs. So should I return it?? And for what drive??+

EDIT: here's HDTach and HDTune tests.... http://img379.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hdtestshs1.jpg Is that worth $100? lol

My new Corsair XMS modules to bump me upto 4gb that came retail packaged from newegg last week, one of the pair was DOA :( first for me too. Argh, annoying.

I've been pretty lucky, WD, Maxtor, Seagate, never had a harddrive failure, at least for drives in my personal systems, thinking all the way back to my first 480/540MB drives. Always retire harddrives due to so small not worth having in a system. Still have 4gig, 10gigs, 40gigs, 60gigs in cabinets. *knock on wood*
