hey i am considering getting this hard drive since its on sale this week at best buy...http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8294632&type=product&id=1172880157923
before i do i got a few questions on it if someone is famaliar with this drive...first how loud is it cause this is one of my major factors when looking for a drive..ive always been a huge western digital fan because of this...second how good of a overall drive and deal is this?

You pointed that out, I called my bestbuy they have 5... i can let you know later tonight after i get off work how it is to my western digital.

edit/////
picked one up on my lunch break... Ahhh man can't wait to get home and try this beast out.

it was a 7200.10 drive. 16MB or cache 5year warranty. Sata cable and power.
This is way cooler then buying OEM, or used parts..

I'll post with the noise level in about three hours when I get home.

thanks for pointing me this OP

I'm actually impressed. It's damn quite. Nice 465GB after format.

My 250Gb SATA scored 167.1MB/s in HDtach

the Segate got 132.8MB/s in HDtach.

but the average read was higher for the 500GB, so i'm pleased.

I think there may be a jumper setting to run it at sata2 but I have it at sata 1... over i'm happy.

if you put your ear close to it can you hear a hum or anything like that? i have a p180b case so it takes away some sound but i definitely dont want to hear any humming...i have 1 seagate and there is a low pitched hum that comes from it that none of my western digitals have

btw i noticed that program identifies the drive as st3500630as and the drive on best buy is model ST3500641AS...so im wondering if its a misprint at best buy or the program is wrong

burst rate is something that is total random thought, not consistent, doesnt garuntee anything?

i would love to see if someone did some benchmarks of harddrives with the burstrate being diff and seeing how it affects synthetic / real life applications... i doubt it would..

AAK, and 7200.10

So shut yo mouth..

No hum.. sounds like the WD

mm what would be better in your opion two of these or one tb seagate if i had to pick one choice

no problem NWO, glad to help. Thanks for having me blow a hundred bucks :)

Ran HDtune how I had it, then I pulled the jumper off to run it in sata 300.

gained 1.6 MB a sec

What model did the box say? My Best Buy only had boxes labeled ST3500641AS and not ST3500630AS.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just bit it and bought one to see for myself. It's labeled 641 on the outside but it's a 630 inside.

is it an AAK drive? or AKK, these seem to have a limit in the firmware of 65mb

i tested this on my 320 and 500 and sure enough it seems true. (i have 4 other 500G that dont have this limit)

God Dammit all 3 drives I picked up are AAK.

The AAK firmware was released by mistake from Segate, it was designed for Server loads and not thouroput. IIRC Segate will warranty replace any AAK drives bought though retail channels.

Same exact Issue. I am calling Segate Tommorow and asking for NEW replacements for all 3 of my drives.

why would you ask for new replacements? My drive seems to be doing fine.

I didnt get one from BB but I have a 500GB 7200.10. Normally I dont notice a hum but whenever its seeking it gets really loud. At random times when Im not doing anything itll seem like its looking for something. This is in Vista. Is this normal? Its really annoying.

Any leads or contact info on replacing drives? I've contacted them a couple times they are basically saying "sucks to be you!" and won't replace them.

Yup got the same response.

I hate to do it, but all 3 of mine are going back to BB. Return reason, Model number in the box does not match the box.

I wanted 5 of the same model drives, with similar performing firmware for my RAID 5 array. I refuse to cripple it because 3 drives are artifically capped because Segate screwed up and released a version to retail that was meant for Server OEMs.

I did, however, have time to call Seagate about this. Their CSR from the RMA department informed me that if the drive is not defective in some manner, they (Seagate) cannot replace/switch it for me. He did give me the number for their "technical" department, but they were closed. The CSR told me that the technical department would have information as to whether this firmware performance difference is a "known issue" or not, and further, whether Seagate can swap my drive for me outside of the warranty.

mines at 34*

spread your drives out if you can, and put a fan on them

well problem is i have a p180b case and i have the drives mounted at bottom thus only way to put a fan in front is mod the case which i really dont want to do...do you think its too high?

my firmware says ".AFF" and made in Thailand, so I should be good right?

Yup, I just got it this evening at BB, its also the PATA version too as well, not SATA.

NWO you're fine... there's some out there that have screen shots of there drives @ 41 - 45 range. so i'd bet your fine.

Mine are spaced a drive bay apart, and have four fans in front of them. So I have crazy air flow.

Ok Im really confused about which drive is on sale at BestBuy.
I show part number ST3500641AS-RK which is the 7200.9 version.
Are you telling me that the box has this but the drive inside is labeled 7200.10?
