SDTVs - does component make much of a difference?

Yeah I know, I know...standard definition displays aren't the "thing" around here...but they are displays. :D When I get back to the states (just over a week from now if all my base outprocessing goes well) I plan on picking up a SDTV, something in the 24-27" range and a price of around $200-$250. I want one for my PS2 and for a Wii (should I end up with one) as I'm not satisfied with the graphical quality of 480i/p on my 2407. Seems like almost all of the standard definition TVs on bestbuy.com and circuitcity.com have component inputs, but if they're still 480i, would it really make all that much difference?

On-topic-

480p is an odd little thing though...too low res for a high-resolution HDTV, not supported by SDTVs, and EDTVs are too expensive for what they are. Not many PS2 games support 480p, either, and I'm mainly looking for a good, relatively cheap display for my PS2 which looks like ass when connected to a high-resolution screen.

Off-topic-

I'm not a Nintendo fan and I don't like the Wii. So I can tell you right now, it's not going to drive me towards making any display purchases, especially when I'm currently happy with my 2407 + XBOX 360 + VGA cable setup.

What?

Why bother buying a TV now if your not sure if you are actually going to use it? Personally, I wouldn't spend the 200-250 dollars on a TV just for PS2 use, even if I had the money sitting on my desk right now.

Just wait, if you get the Wii, then buy one, but until then, the 2407 will probably actually look a whole lot better than an SDTV (since it won't be interlaced)

No way around it...my PS2 looks like shit on my 2407 and I don't have a regular TV right now. Making sense now? And yes, I'm *actually* going to use it...I still have Dragon Quest VIII and God of War to finish, and I haven't really even started MGS3. I'm going to be picking up Xenosaga Episode 3, and when Final Fantasy XII comes out I'll be picking that up as well.

Yeah I agree, the PS2 looks bad on any high res monitor. I hooked it up to my 2007wfp and it looks bad and blurry cause it's being upscaled to such a high res.

i dunno what to tell ya - i have a 2001FP and my PS2 looks great on it. obviously not as good as it is on my 61" DLP, but better than my SDTV.

Can we get back on topic please? At 480i is the difference between component and s-video noticeable?

yup. component cables will make a difference. If you've ever compared RCA jacks to S-VIDEO and seen a sharpness increase, well double that. Every detail will be much sharper. In my case, the colors didn't improve much but clarity did. Panasonic 27" Tau 480i

for what it is worth.

I was using composite connection (also incorrectly referred to as RCA connection) for SDTV (satellite) on a HDTV screen. I finally bought a S video cable and the picture was much much better. There is greater separation in the colors and video noise is very low as well.

I don't know if you will see a dramatic improvement going from svideo to components, but I can say the difference from composite to svideo is substantial.

if the components do not cost much more, might as well get them.

Yes, Component on an SDTV definately makes a difference. I tried out the different cables a few years ago to see if there was actually a difference (32" standard bubble TV). I started with Composite and went from there. S-video gave a sharper image over Composite - I was using Jet Li's "The One" DVD as my demo disc and I could read the lettering on the police uniform patches a lot easier, much clearer. I then tested it out with Component. It was like S-video but with better color - like doing a color boost in a photo editing program. iirc Component is not *quite* as sharp as S-video, but I like the picture the best from Component overall.

Also, I've heard that PS2 owners like S-video better than Component due to the way it handles games (blockiness and whatnot). So you could have your PS2 on S-video and your Wii on Component.

then your experience is exactly why components were made. better color rendition with components.
