SDHC memory card not recognised by PC

The SDHC card in my camera is coming up with 'card error' and I lost all my photo's. I tried connecting it to my pc via usb cable however xp is not recognising the card whatsoever.

Is there anything that can be done to get xp to recognise the card?
 
Just so I understand. Are you saying you had photos on your card in your camera and when you took the card out and put it in your usb the photos weren't there/pc cannot read them? Or are you saying even if it goes back in the camera they're gone forever?
 
I assume it worked in the past? Not all card readers are SDHC Compatible.

If there really is a card error, then nothing you can do, data is likely gone.

Does it work in the camera? What camera are you using?
