Ok, I really need some memory for my Minolta DiMage G500, as my mom is going on a trip to Germany, Italy, and Spain, and we only have 16MB right now. Now, I figured that would be scraping the bottom by far, but she wanted "really good" quality pictures, and since it only takes 15 or so pictures at the highest resolution (2592x1944) and not that many more at the next step down (2048x1506). So, needless to say, i'm in the market for some more flash memory.

Now, im a camera noob pretty much, so I just need some help picking some out, i'd really like to have 256+, and keep the price under $200-250. My camera takes SD and MemorySticks.

I have noticed SD is more expensive than the MemorySticks, but I dont know why, that is really my main question, what are the differences between SD flash and MemorySticks?

Thanks in advance.

I would go with SD cards considering the Memory Sticks only are supported up to 128MB. According to Steve's Digicams, if you do go the SD route, you should only use the brands Minolta recommends or you will get errors: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2003_reviews/dimage_g500_pg5.html

As far as prices go, Memory sticks have been pricey for as long as I can remember, but I haven't priced them for a while until tonight and they seem to be more than the same capacity SD cards at Circuit City. Check your local ads. I saw a Lexar(?) 512MB SD card for $99 or so in one of them this morning.

Bump, anyone else?

And also, do I have to use one of the cards off that site? I know it says not to... but who does what everyone tells them to :-P.

I don't know what bizarro world you are living in but SD is FAR cheapr than Sony's proprietary memory sticks. In fact, SD is the second cheapest format, just behind compact flash.

Just a quick search on newegg and I found 256mb SD cards on average about $25 cheaper than 256mb memory sticks.

Go with SD because:

1. it's cheaper

2. it's available in higher capacities for devices that don't take MS-Pro, in fact, it's still available in higher capacites for devices that DO take MS-Pro

3. it's more compatible with other devices (most digital cameras use SD, PDAs, MP3 players etc.)

Actually SD will probably eventually take over compact flash. It's smaller, faster, and getting cheaper by the day.

It be a long time before SD takes over CF. Cf holds up to 1gb and 6gb for CFII. Faster? No, not the ultra CF cards anywayz.
