Scuzzy Floppy Drive?

I bought my Sony floppy drive way back in April when I purchased my whole computer and today was the first time I used it. It doesn't work for some reason. Whenever I try to save a Word document (or any file for that matter) it says: "The selected disk drive is not in use. Check to make sure a disk is inserted." Trust me, the disk is all the way in and I checked the hardware manager and it says the flopy drive is fine...I also have tried using multiple disks and the same error appears.

I was thinking SCSI too. Anyway, it is very common for a floppy drive to go bad. You can grab a new one for under $5.
 
Can you boot to a floppy? If not, then the drive or the cable is bad.
 
make sure the floppy access light lights up when you bootup, if it doesnt, the drive is broken, or more likely not setup right. Floppy cables generally have 2 connectors that you could plug it into, and they arent always marked which direction you plug the connector into. So basically unless you were really paying attention when you plugged it in, 75% chance its plugged in wrong. It also might be disabled in bios, so you'll want to check that as well.
 
yeah, pull the floppy cable, flip it over 180 degrees and try again, and remember the red line on the cable, 99 percent of the time, is on the same side as the power connector, even if the cable connector isn't keyed for a certein direction
 
my many years of experience says "if the drive access light is always on, the cable is installed backwards"
 
wow, I never knew the direction of the cable made a difference on the floppy

guess I've just always been lucky


and yes, the title is way off
