Hi again,

I was looking on E-Bay and I saw that they are selling 9.1 gig 15K SCSI drives. I was thinking that for about 30 bones each might be nice to have. Unfortunately, I am a scsi newb and no litlle about them. I have experiance with SATA raid but no scsi. My question is what type of controller would I need. They are 80 pin drives so I assume I would need an 80 to 68 adaptor as I have not seen many cards that have an 80 pin on the board. These drives are also ULTRA 3 so I assume that is something I will need as well. As for the cables can I hook both drives to the same cable for raid or do they need seperate connections like SATA. Any help apreciated. Thanks.

You'll need a compatible SCSI Ultra-160 or -320 controller with RAID function (the Ultra 3 is implied with these SCSI modes). The controller will have one or more channels. For the most part, you'll only need one channel (one cable) if you're just going to do SCSI hard drives. Usually, SCSI optical and tape devices are put on a separate channel.

Make sure to read the SCSI FAQ in the Data Storage forum before proceeding.

Woops I didn't see the Data Storage forum otherwise I wouldn't have posted in general harware.

Yeah, just PM one of the mods and they'll get your thread moved. The Data Storage regulars are all quite knowledgeable.

U will be glad u only paid that for the SCSI drives cuz SCSI raid controllers are not cheap. for example check adaptec. if you can get one one ebay that may save u some money.

I bought an LSI MegaRAID Elite 1600 for fairly cheap on ebay, and it's a great card. Dual channel, 64bit/66MHz PCI (backwards compatible) U160 SCSI RAID... and can be had for less than $200.
