Ok, I think I know the answer to this question but I just want some other opinions...it should also be an answer I already know but is one of those "too afraid to ask because you'll look like a fool for not knowing it" types of questions :D

I have an Adaptec 2110S SCSI RAID controller currently running 5 Seagate Cheetah X15.3 (15K RPM) drives in a RAID 5 configuration. I use that array as my OS and program files drives. I then also have an Adaptec 29160 SCSI controller that I use for my storage drive, once again, a Seagate Cheetah drive (only a 10K RPM unit) and, swap file drive and etc, and the controller has a dated Plextor UltraWide CD-ROM and an old Hitachi DVD-RAM drive on it. I'm thinking of getting rid of the Plextor CD-ROM and Hitachi DVD-RAM since I want new components and what's the point of having a seperate DVD and CD now a days. So that just leaves me with one SCSI drive on that controller. So the question is, since both drives are the same, 68-pin Ultra160 LVD, can I add that single drive to my RAID controller and have it operate as a single, additional drive or does it need to be part of an RAID array to be accessible? :confused:

On a side note, I'm considering replacing the Plextor and Hitachi drives with this Pioneer slot SCSI unit (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/p...B,00.html?compName=PNA_ProductDetailComponent). Any one have any other suggestions? SATA is an option, too.

Adaptec SCSI RAID 3200S
Adaptec SCSI RAID 3400S

The RAID controller you have, can be used as a regular SCSI card. Hard drives attached on the controller, do not have to be defined as part of any array to work properly. You can use the drive as a regular single drives if you wish without defining any RAID Array set.

However, the RAID Cards are designed for use with multiple devices. To get the full capabilities / potential of the RAID controller, it is best to use the hard drives attached to them, under RAID configuration.

So I guess that answers my question. Even though my product is an Adaptec 2110S and this article says its for a 2100S...maybe they mean the product family line.

On some controllers, you have to create an array of that single drive in order for the drive to be recognizable by the OS.

I have an Adaptec 2100S card that has a RAID-5 cluster and two arrays with a single drive each on it. When creating the single-drive arrays, it automatically chose RAID-1 as the type.
 
I'll test it out either tonight or this weekend...depends on how much computer time the wife gives me... :rolleyes: I meant to try it out last night but I had a problem with the SagteTV HTPC and that took up most of the evening to fix. I'll post back with the results.
