SCSI RAID 1 vs SATA RAID 1?

Currently I have 2 10,000RPM 18GB Ultra160 SCSI drives setup with RAID 1. One of the drives died so I may need to get a replacement. With SATA falling in price and speeding up I am wondering if I should switch. I really doubt that SATA is faster or even as fast as SCSI but I wanted to know if it would make any sense as far as performance and cost to switch to SATA.

Raptors seem like the only reasonable option for any kind of server system. While it would be just fine to use SATA in a future build, you're better off buying a replacement SCSI drive for now. No sense in buying all new hardware and dealing with (potentially) an OS reinstall, etc. Your setup is fast and, as you've learned, fault tolerant... I say stick with it.

Well I am actually going to be doing a total server overhaul. Probably Monday I will be doing a full format and upgrade to Windows 2003 server, Exchange 2003, and SQL 2000. I have a temp server that will work in its place until I get the normal one back up and running. Since I am going to have to buy a new HDD probably I wanted to check my options before doing so.

lots of choices really...personally, i'd stay with scsi and just sata for storage drives.

Well I have 2 mirrored 18GB SCSI for data and a 40GB IDE for OS and some applications. I wouldnt change the IDE to SATA right now because the motherboard I am currently using doesnt have SATA and would have to buy a card. I should probably just try and find a matching drive and rebuild the mirror since that would be the cheapest. It would be nice to get some new 36GB 15000 drives but I dont think thats in the budget.

Certainly... :D

Or keep up with your backups!

UICompE02 do you work for LSI Logic? I met someone at an AMD tech tour who im sure wasnt you but I was impressed with LSI stuff. If you do work for LSI maybe you could throw some leftover hardware to us (OCModShop.com)? :)

Yes, I do actually... It probably wasn't me you met, but was most likely someone from my organization in the company that I work with on a regular basis (if it was storage products they were showing off, that is ) Part of my job description includes giving demos for OEM customers and trade shows, but mostly the more senior guys get to go to the cool ones.

I wish I could throw some leftover hardware to you guys, but I can't even get a single controller for myself without paying for it...... :(
