SCSI Overkill For Gaming ?

I was thinking of buying Asus's 975X motherboard and playing around with some SCSI hard drives. Would this interface be overkill when it comes to setting up a gaming machine?
 
Depends. You'd probably be just as happy with a rapto150.

To get the performance of the raptor 150 you're looking at going into the higher end 15k drives, which are significantly more expensive per GB. Add in cost of controller as well because you're going to want a decent controller.

I was playing with the idea of going with SAS drives for speed and then mix them with some SATA drives for low cost storage. SAS and SATA drives can be mixed and that was the route that I was looking at taking.
 
You need a SAS controller to deal with scsi drives. SAS controllers can deal with SATA drives, but not the other way around.

Stick with sata. Scsi is designed for server applications, and you won't get much performance boost out of it (in desktop/game applications) compared to a Raptor. You'll spend a whole lot of money getting a controller and drives, and not get much out of it.

what U_M is trying to say is that you need a SAS controller for SAS drives and that a SAS controller can also access SATA drives. A 'run of the mill' SCSI controller won't be able to access either SATA or SAS drives without some funky adapter (if at all).
 
Well, yes, I agree with mage here. SCSI (U320) is overkill unless you want maximum throughput with very little cpu usage. However this requires an expensive card (at least 600 or so) and expensive drives. But hey, if you have 1000 bucks or so to through around, go for it (for a good LSI U320 card and one 147 GB drive, 15k rpm). But just imaging what you could get for that same price. Get a $400-500 SATA RAID card (Areca), and 5-200 GB drives in RAID 5, or 6 in RAID 0+1. You're getting a lot more space, and it's probably just as fast.
 
Yeah it's overkill. SCSI drives can also be quite loud.

I went with SCSI because just seeing it blow away all the other drives in the World of Warcraft test over at Storage Review was enough for me. The raptor 150 was no slouch though, I think it came in 4th or 5th.
 
You can find Fujitsu MAS/MAU/MAX drives quite cheap on Ebay occasionally. And an LSI U160 like I use is dirt cheap.
