Hi

I have a few questions about what i should do with the following predicament. I want to upgrade to faster hard drives, but i am having trouble deciding which upgrade offers the best performance. I'm stuck between scsi and sata. My setup at the moment does not have sata or scsi, so i will have to add an interface card unless i buy a new motherboard, which i dont really want to do due to the extra cost that it will incur.

Will i see a big difference in a desktop system by going scsi? If i do go with scsi i will be sourcing out the parts on ebay.
 
You're better off going sata for home use. SCSI is nice but it is geared more towards high I/O type operations that enterprise environments offer. A nice Raptor 150, or even a decent Seagate 7200.9 drive would do quite nicely for you. I recommend against getting scsi off ebay as most the older, less expensive hardware won't perform well on desktop use as a newer 7200 rpm drive.

Note that the Fujitsu MAU delivers the best game performance of all of the drives, taking two of the three game access patterns. However, the 150GB Raptor pulls ahead in the desktop productivity measures. Neither of the 7200RPM drives come close performance wise.

However, be very careful about what you buy on Ebay. Only the Fujitsu MAU series and Maxtor Atlas 15K II can match the desktop application performance of the Raptor. There are many 10K and 15K drives flaoting around on Ebay, but most of them have firmware that is tuned exclusively for sevrer operation and they have significantly higher heat and noise profiles than ATA drives.

Personally, I'd just stick with ATA drives.
 
If your computer is so old that it doesn't support SATA, the money might be better spent on a different upgrade.
 
Thanks for replying. I have decided, after looking on ebay that scsi is gonna be too expensive for me, so i think i am going to go sata.

Now i have to choose whether or not to use an io card or upgrade my whole system. Which will give me the best performance?

Well it goes without saying a system upgrade would give better performance, that's somewhat inherent in the meaning of the word upgrade.

Yes, it will give better performance, but will the extra performance be enough to justify the outlay?

My setup is as follows

Athlon xp 2100 (max proc 2400)
512mb ddr 2100 (max speed 2100)
Asus mobo

What sort of increase would i expect to see if i were to upgrade my whole system, rather than just add an interface card for sata? 10% ?
 
Also, with e-bay, you're not even getting a good deal on SCSI. If you want used SCSI, hit up the FS/T forums, especially at 2cpu.
 
SCSI drives are still far more robust than SATA/IDE drives.

SCSI drives on eBay are generally those removed from decommissioned servers. So they are likely to have been well used to say the least.
