I'm hoping this is a simple answer (and question), but here goes. I have an HP Netserver LH3000R, that can handle either U2 or U3 LVD scsi drives. Would an Ultra160 LVD drive work in this server? I'm not sure if SCSI can downgrade speeds, like IDE can...in terms of working with older controllers.
 
I've got a SCSI chain with a pair of Ultra 2 drives, another pair of Ultra 3 (on SCA adapters) drives, and a U320 drive, all on the same cable, and they all work perfectly. They are on an Ultra 3 HBA, and I am quite impressed with the forward/backward compatibility of SCSI.
 
Yes, SCSI is backward compatible; however, saying that you also need to know that the bus will drop to the lowest common denominator in terms of speed. So if you have 3 X Ultra160 HDD, a UltraWide CD-ROM and then Fast SCSI device of some sort, say an older scanner or something, then the whole bus speed will SLOW down to Fast SCSI speed (10 MB/sec). If you can put your hi-performance devices on one bus then your old/slower devices on another, it is preferred. FYI.
