i FINALLY figured out how to take the ****** ****** off the cpu. I needed to do this cause i screwed up applying the thermal compound the first time. so i took it off, and i figured i can just rub off the current AS5 with a inverted zip lock bag, cause my friend told me that this is ok. (i don't have any rubbing alcohol) i got a zip lock bag from the kitchen, and stuck my finger through it, and prepared to clean the heatsink. I rubbed it a bit, and then noticed some strange liquid on the surface of the hs. i touched the bag, and realized oh ****, it was oily... APPARENTLY I USED AN USED ZIP LOCK BAG WITH ******* OILY RESIDUE ON IT. then i took a NEW bag, and tried as best as i could to remove the oil and the thermal compound. then i did the same with the cpu, slapped it on and heres my results...

before:

idle: 45c
load: 49c

now:

idle: 43-45c
load: 50ish

.

so is it possible for me to get some rubbing alcohol now and attempt to clean up both the hs and cpu? or will it not make a difference?

just make sure its a hight alcohol to water ratio and not the cheap stuff, the more alcohol the less extra stuff that doesn't evaporate to be left on the cpu

The last time I was at the optometrist, I got a free lens cleaning kit.

What does that have to do with anything you ask? I'll tell you. The kit included pre-moistened (with isopropanol) lens cloths. Since they're for lenses, they're lint free, and an individually wrapped wipe/cloth is very convenient.

Some alcohol (isopropyl) wipes would be excellent, and might be easier than the bottle.

grab some 99% isopropyl for a 1.49 at your local safeway, it's the stuff i use :).
