1.5 years in and my VSX-820 receiver does some kind "it's coming out of a cave" effect and promptly dies. Didn't get it serviced, didn't even open the damn thing. Threw it right in the trash and ordered the Topping TP41 I was looking at anyway. I will remember my bitterness for a very long time Pioneer.
 
Yes it sucks but I would not use that one failure to indicate overall Pioneer quality. 8 years in and mine is still running like clockwork.

Do enjoy the Topping though, I've heard many a good thing about them. :)
 
Yeah my pioneer is 31 years old and still works, You probably had some easy to fix oxidation.

Oh well Topping is incredible and i would trade my tried and true pioneed for one with a headphone amp any day.
 
Similar experience with pioneer car stereo products, got it serviced and it did it again inside of a month. Still has a bitter taste 15 years latter.
 
lol. i too have an old pioneer receiver that's being used for a stereo system and it still works great. i wouldn't expect much from any of the bargain basement priced avrs anyway.

Yeah cheap stuff means cheap parts including the solder and quality control goes too.
 
Pioneer is usually considered much more reliable than say Onkyo, even the low-mid tier products.

For some reason, when I had my Topping, it was so hard to resell ._.;; great amp though.
 
well... I have the following working well pioneer gear

34~ year old SX-780

34~ year old SX-450

33~ year old SA-710

32~ year old SA-410


and a 4~ year old VSX-519V-K which is the only fairly modern pioneer gear i have and it despite being a pretty entry level unit, it has been flawless in it's performance.


the build quality is if i'm honest better on the 30+ year old units ...but the vsx was $189 new and for example when new in 1978 the SX-780 sold for $325 34 years ago..so adjusted for inflation would be about equivalent to $1100 now, i suppose it makes sense these older units where built more solidly.


it sucks that yours died after 1.5 years ..but it may well have been something easy to fix (no way to say.) was the pioneer properly ventilated? or was it crammed somewhere with 1.5mm of clearance for the top vents?

well those little t-amps should leave you with more desk space i suppose... I don't have the topping but i do have a SMSL SA-S3 t-amp and it sounds pretty decent for the money and size of it.
 
They do not build them like they used to is very appropriate in audio equipment.:)
 
well... they do...but they don't sell those ones (the ones built like the old ones) at best buy (or newegg.)

anyways there is some new gear that is built as well as the 30+ year old gear...it is just expensive..but the classic gear was expensive compared to the mass market stuff today.
 
I messed up counting, My Pioneer is 33 years old.

Its not as good as a old panasonic technics I had. It ended up dieing from water being spilled into the top.
