Im looking for the precise screw sizes used for each component.

Like, those screws that go in for the motherboard, the HDD trays, the optical drive trays, the pci slot area, pretty much everything. I tried checking websites for the hardware but to no avail.

Maybe checking the manual is an option - though wondering if theres a sort of compendium out there for this stuff.

Even like the small screw holes on the bottom of maxtor hard drives... I dunno, i can tell a 3/16ths from a 1/4" but thats about as far as i go...

Wasnt able to eye ball the sizes, nor match them with a sized screw i knew the measurements for.

Any help is appreciated.
 
As far as I'm aware, there are only actually two screw sizes for computers. One is the screw that's used to hold in PCI slots, the motherboard to the mobo tray, the case cover etc, and the other are the screws used hard drives + other such devices.

I regret I don't know what the actual sizes are, because I never have to buy them --I just strip them out of the old 486 type computers I always have lying around somewhere or other :).

when i started building my first computer, i had a retarded approach to securing stuff...i used the same screws (the ones for the cases, motherboard, PCI slots, etc) to screw in everything since i had so many of these screws.... all my drives in this computer have these screws now...i forced it into my hdd, cd-rw, dvd-rom, and floppy


but that doesnt mean you should do that
 
Haha. Just say you 'adapted your peripherals to use the same screw format'. That doesn't sound so bad ;).

I'm not really for sure on the names on all the screws because i havnt read any screw reviews lately and someone told me what several of them were a while back and i forgot.

Anyways as far as my Antec cases go, the short fine threaded ones with the octagon shaped heads are used for the motherboard risers and the optical drives, the thicker threaded round headed screws go to the hard drives i believe, and the even larger octagon headed screws go to such things as the PCI slots and the case panels.

My bag of screws for my Antec 1080 also came with 4 long fine threaded screws that will of course fit into the motherboard risers and optical drives also but they are too long. I dont really know where they go to yet :).

As a rule of thumb just try different screws till you find one that fits and is the right length. If it doesn't screw in real easy dont force it and try another. If you force it you will just strip the threads.

In my "PC Stuff Tool Box" i have 3 diff bunches of screws in their own area, Case screws, Device screws & Fan\FanGrill screws.

so far there hasn't been 1 time where i coudln't find a screw i was looking for.
 
Wow thanks for the replys guys, this startech thing seems to be helping our pretty good. Now i have an idea of exactly what i need.

needed the screw sizes because im mounting everything for my backpack pc so ill need the same screws, just... long enough to go through 1/4" acrylic.

If it fits, use it.
If it doesn't fit, you just need a bigger screwdriver;)
