Screen wrapping bug on 6870

I've tried googling my problem many times, but I don't really know if there is a word for my kind of video bug, so I haven't been successful. When I'm playing computer games, after awhile, the screen will suddenly wrap around with a thick vertical break in the middle. The left side of my screen will be in the middle, and if I move my mouse right from there, it wraps around to to right side, which is also in the middle. On newer games, this usually happens in the first hour of playing. The only way to fix it that I can tell is to restart my computer.

Is anyone familiar with this bug, or can they at least tell me the name of my problem so I can research it?

I'm running a Radeon 6870 on Windows 7. The drivers are up to date.
 
Next time this happens, ALT-Tab the game and go into CCC, then AMD overdrive and lower your memory speed. Hopefully it's because your overclocking, as this would likely fix it. What I found when this happens it's because your memory overclock is unstable.
 
i experienced this yesterday while messing with some overclocks on my 6870. :D

I was dealing with this a week and I felt so relieved when by simply moving the memory slider down in CCC/Overdrive it went right away. That's a quick way to learn your memory OC is unstable.
 
Ok. Thanks for the help. Out of curiosity, is this only caused by memory overclocking? Would core overclocking not cause this?

From my experience only memory affected it. If your memory is at stock speed and it's still happening try reducing your core speed and see if it helps.
 
Yep happened to me. Brought my 1250 down to 1225. I know my max stable oc now at least on my 6870
 
I'm having this same problem running stock. It CCC won't let me lower the mem speed as stock is at the lowest setting. I've clocked it down from the default 800mhz to 650mhz It seemed to stabilize for 2 days then it started acting up again. The card has been replaced once, I know its a matter if getting the settings right but is really sucks to have to clock DOWN from stock.

RMA the card. I had the same issues and spent an entire month wasting my time testing every setting, running every hardcore stress test and applying different thermal compound on the card itself..

If you are having this problem at stock and cooling is not an issue, then save yourself the time and headache by RMA'ing the card..

Was the last card replaced for the same thing? 2 bum cards in a row always warrants looking at other components in your rig.
 
It seems to be cooling fine. Other people are having these issues with great cooling and more power. Its an issue with a number of ATI models. I just haven't been able to figure out what the similar hardware combinations are that may be causing this. You can scrub the drivers and reseat the card, and the issue will randomly come up.

I'm temped to trade out my 6950 for a slightly less powerful card just to have the problem resolved.
