Screen shaking in windowed mode

Brand new XFX 5770 running at stock settings runs fine in games, but when a game is in windowed mode it will shake the top of the screen unless I minimize everything but one window. If I play any game - such as warcraft 3, shattered horizon, TF2 - in windowed mode with a browser in the background or something then the screen will start shaking randomly.

If anyone has a solution, let me know before I call up XFX.

It could be because the GPU is still running in a low power state, because there's not enough activity, but just enough activity for it to cause problems.

Have you tried increasing the Window size? I'm guessing in fullscreen it works fine?

Fullscreen works better - but not 100%. Having ventrilo open but not minimized can cause problems when I play LFD2 in fullscreen mode (screen shaking occasionally)... but if I have everything minimized but the game fullscreened then I'm fine. Temps is fine and so is the PSU. I traded up from a 9800 GT.

No difference. :(

Even got a black screen when I tried to do the heaven benchmark with CCC open. bleh

Edit: WTF is with these idle clocks?

I made a profile in CCC and edited the xml file to change the clock settings for the three different power play settings but it still refuses to use them. If I play youtube and warcraft 3 then my system crashes. The only way to nurse this stupid problem is to trick it into clocking higher... If I open a HD video and play it then it actually clocks higher, but still not up to it's highest clocks - then I pause the video and I can play fine. This seems like the stupidest problem ever. If I don't find a real solution then I'm going to RMA. It should NOT be staying on idle power mode when I open 3d applications! This is like being stuck in 2nd gear... ugh.

its actually nothing to do with the drivers i believe.. it has everything to do with Aero.. in windowed mode Aero can effect certain games.. Crysis is one of these games that hates aero when in windowed mode especially if you are using a custom desktop/layout/icons.. it should pop up a window asking if you want to disable aero if you select keep custom desktop/aero and never ask again it usually fixes it..

as far as the video thing goes.. you need to disable hardware acceleration in flash media player.. this should allow you to play the video and have the game on at the same time..

the only other thing i can think of is that your drivers crashed at some point and its now stuck in 2D mode.. i know this happens with nvidia drivers.. not sure if its the same with ATI drivers.. you could also try using rivatuner and forcing it to use 3D clocks always but im not sure that will actually help either.. at least with rivatuner i believe you can setup the clocks per application.. so that say you open crysis.exe it will automatically set it to 3D clock speeds.. but i havent messed with that..

at this point im just stabbing at idea's that others havent come up with.. so hopefully one of those work for you.. good luck.. btw those idle clocks are correct.. its why the 5k series uses so little power compared to any other gpu on the market..

Turned aero off and hardware acceleration in flash media player and then I crashed while listening to a last.fm playlist while playing Team Fortress 2 (not even in windowed mode). (stripe screen then white then black) I have reinstalled my drivers 3 times at this point. I'm really getting sick of this. I know the idle clocks are correct - but it will keep those clocks for TOO long. When I open up wc3, it never clocks up until I full screen it and minimize every other window. This means I cannot play while using any messenger client or w/e. I was able to do this easily with my 9800gt.
