I just have a quick question for you guys,

I've been playing the odd DotA game here and there. My only problem is that from time to time my screen goes all wacked out and I have no idea why.

I snapped a quick picture with my phone of what my screen looks like...



This only happens when I'm playing DotA (or in SC2 which I just got as well), it doesn't freeze or shut down my computer but it checkerboards the whole screen. It's never happened while web browsing or watching movies, just in full screen games. And is usually fixed by a quick reset.

However, my concern is what could be causing this? Is it just because it's an old card? (Yes I know it's out dated) I've had it for a while now, and my computers been running fairly consistent the last 5 years.. Is it just time for a new one? Or could soemthing else be causing it.

Anyways, if anyone could help me diagnose the problem I'd greatly appreciate it.

is your card overheating? that kinda of looks likes bad vram to me
 
Blizzard quickly covered it up by removing it from their known issues thread in their technical support forums but it was well publicized that their shitty coding left the game menu screens' framerate uncapped. That was causing all kinds of systems to overheat specially Nvidia video card based ones and even fried a bunch of cards and entire systems in some cases.

Let me quote from a previous version of the page:
Certain screens make your hardware work pretty hard

Screens that are light on detail may make your system overheat if cooling is overall insufficient. This is because the game has nothing to do so it is primarily just working on drawing the screen very quickly. A temporary workaround is to go to your Documents\StarCraft II Beta\variables.txt file and add these lines:

frameratecapglue=30

frameratecap=60

You may replace these numbers if you want to.

Thanks for the replies.

I have re-installed the drivers, and the same error still occurs.

As far as the card, I don't believe it's overheating, I'll try to replicate the problem with my monitoring program running. But I will monitor that, so thank you : )

As far as a SC2 specific error, I don't believe it's the problem... just because the error DOES still come up while I'm playing DotA - Yes it's another blizzard product... I used to play dota quite freaquently back in the day and NEVER had this problem. I noticed it occuring while in Dota about a month ago, and it was intermittent.. And it's surfacing now, a little more frequently with SC2.

The only noticeable difference between playing a DotA game and a SC2 game is that the error comes up quicker while playing SC2 as appose to dota. I guess SC2 is draining more resources and might actually be what thax suggested. Overheating..

I didn't know there was drama with Blizzard and Non-Blizzard fan boys. Frankly I don't care who makes the game or what they hide/release, just that it's enjoyable. I appreciate the insight and will read further about those problems blizzard has reported, but I'm not looking for a flame game here. All I care is that MY problem is solved with the checkerboard screen.

Is this happening in all 3D apps? Are your games fully patched? Have changed drivers recently? Have you tried an older version of your driver? Have you checked to see if the heatsink is clean and the fan working? Do you know it's not getting hot or you just don't think so (get GPU-Z and make sure)? If you check all of the above and your still having problems then more than likely it"s the vRAM and the card is on it's way out.
 
So far it's only happened in 3d apps. Both games are fully patched. Haven't changed drivers recently. So I haven't switched to an older version...

I did check to see if the heatsink was clean, it is/was. Opened up the case and all fans were working but I blew out case anyways.. She wasn't overly dusty. I ran SC2 last night with CPUZ, Coretemp, & Motehrboard Monitor5 and all temps across the board were consistent.

I was actually able to play for more then 25 minutes which was sweet but just makes trying to figure out what's wrong that much harder.

I'll play around some more after work tonight.

I'll try your suggestion if / when I get another error...

For what ever reason, it appears to be runnin error free. Ran tonight for 2 hours, without a hitch..Not sure exactly what I did which might have solved the problem but for now it's alright..

But in any case, is there a recommendation as to a subtitle gfx card upgrade out there - thinking in the 500mb range?? I rarely play pc games these days, just got SC2 b/c a friend wants me to play with him... but my gaming used to only ever be cs 1.6 which was why my trusty x800xl has been more then good enough.

Any help / suggestions would be greatly appreciated... because as you can tell, my hardware is easily 5 years out dated and as too is my knowledge about anything current.
