Ok, I'm not sure if it'll stay dead (probably will), but it's dead for now.
My sister-in-law's dad found a Compaq Presario by the side of the road next to the trash can. It's an old Athlon 1.1 machine. Apparently it had some problems, as he had a hard time getting it to fire up and someone wrote "This computer sucks" on it. He gave it to me to get up and running, and now it's gone and died. The thing was crashing when I'm not looking, so I decided to hit it with memtest86 and Prime95 to see if I could figure out what was causing the problem. It ran Prime95 for a good 6 hours, then was toasted when I got up in the morning. Oops. It powers up, but doesn't post, beep, or produce any video output. I guess it's parts swapping time. (so far I've just messed with the ram & switched vid cards). Unless I've developed 2 bad memory sticks at once it's probably not the ram & the vid card I've already changed, so my best bets are CPU, mobo, and PSU.
Just for kicks, what do you guys think is fried?
 
Just in case anyone's wondering, here are proper system specs:

Compaq Presario Model 5004US (ie- a Best Buy computer)
AMD Athlon 1.1 w/ Taisol cooler
128MB Micron PC100, 256MB Kingston PC133
Tried both the original TNT2 M64 and a Radeon 9100 (was running the 9100 when it died)
250W PSU
60GB HD
CD-RW
DVD-Rom
SMC 10/100 PCI NIC
PCI modem
Busted floppy drive
 
i have a HP that is very similar in the athlon dept, its a mobile athlon 4 1.2ghz, and i found that it was crashing alot too. the damn heatsink was broken and relying on pressure from the keyboad to keep contact with the CPU. a little superglue later on the retention posts and all was dandy. if you left it prime 95'in, my guess would be the CPU burned up and possibly the mobo too

edit: LOL i just realized its a desktop! what i said still stands tho, although it itm ight just be the mobo

That looks fine. Keep in mind that this chip is in the old style ceramic packaging, so it's unlikely to show the discoloration seen on fried CPUs with organic packaging.
 
it sounds like an overheating issue that led to the cpu frying or something. did u try taking it out of the motherboard and looking at it?
 
reseat all the components first off. i doubt that the ram is having any probbies. and since you say it still powers up (by this you must mean case fans only or so), i would venture to say the processor did not like the heat it was getting. just out of curiosity though, can you get anything to come up by resetting the cmos? might sound stupid, but can't hurt. my vote would go to the cpu, or to more than one component ( ala motherboard too)
