The 9800 Pros seem to be going pretty cheap right. As far as I can tell, they can play any current game maxed out and I don't see any games announced for which that will not be true.

At the rate video cards are being released, isn't it likely that a 9800 Pro would play all current-gen games until next line of vid cards is out?

If you are trying to decide between a 9800PRO and a x800PRO, you might want to stop in the middle at the $290 GeForce 6800 standard 128mb. Its slower than the x800PRO, but about 15-30% faster than the 9800XT 256mb. Plus it has Shader Model 3.0 and FP16 for HDR Lighting, making it more future proof than the 9800PRO for about $80 more.

The extra horsepower of the 6800 will get you higher resolutions in some of the more upcoming stressful games (Doom3, Half Life 2), and HDR Lighting in FarCry 1.3 unlike the 9800PRO.

However, whether that is worth the $80 or not is up to you. A 9800PRO will likely be able to run the upcoming games like Doom3 in 800x600 or 1024x768 at medium detail.

Nowadays games take so long to produce that the video card they're built for is a generation behind, as we're seeing with HL2.

Seems like the trend will continue since better graphic cards = more graphics work

If you're worried about running Doom 3 with a 9800pro...don't. Keep in mind that D3 was still in development when the 9500pro/9700 were king of the hill. Having said that, I believe a 6800nu or 6800GT would be a better buy right now.
