A team of researchers from the University of Montpellier in France have found a method of printing RFID chips directly onto paper. The process utilizes a thermal evaporation process using aluminum, making it not only universal in application, but cheap to produce.

Unlike barcodes, they use radio signals, which can be detected over a short range, without a visual contact between the tag and the reader device.

Finally! I've been hoping for dirt cheap rfid's for a while now to organize my library. Looks like i've only got another 5 years to wait...:p

Maybe I just missed something, but metal deposition by thermal evaporation has been used for decades. What exactly was the breakthrough?

obviously paper was the breakthrough, they found out they could cut wood and turn it into paper :) *instantly digs in pockets for investment money*
