British scientists have come up with a way to completely waterproof electronic gadgets. Sounds cool, not sure when it would ever come in handy, but it sounds cool.

Scientists in Britain have come up with a solution for making electronic gadgets completely waterproof, using a type of coating that repels liquids. The technology has, up until now, been used for military gear, but the makers of Ion-Mask are already in discussion with three cellphone manufacturers with a view to using the coating on their products.

Come in handy?

Are you f'n kidding?

How dense is your skull?

Truly if you are being facetious then learn how to inflect it properly over the net.

How many laptop owners have spilled orange juice, win or soda into their laptop?

"Ion-Mask is a protective layer that bonds to the device using a plasma, or electronically charged gas, and its chemical properties allow oil and water to be repelled easily"

It sounds like this is the step in the right direction to having spill proof laptops that don't take away from the design by making some odd reservoir to contain spilled liquids in under the keyboard.

I realize that one can recover a laptop that has had liquids spilled into it but no one wants to have to go through all those crazy procedures.

He was referring to the fact that computer enthusiasts such as ourselves rarely make it outside to see the elements.

Apparently Steve just hasn't heard of the rash of Executives catching Blackberry-Toilet Syndrome.

  • After six years you don't know how to quote posts?
  • You can't connect more than two sentences without going to a new line? Paragraphs are nice, and they won't bite.
  • According to, well, yourself, your logic (with a K) is fuzzy. Discussing someone else's logic (or lack thereof) is either poetic justice or fatally ironic.
  • Someone who lists WoW as an interest should easily understand the tech humor of never going outside. Sure, you could drop your iPod into the sink, your cell phone into a beer, your laptop into the bathtub.
  • Did you drop your sarcasm detector in the shower today?

I hope the first place they use it is on USB thumbdrives. Thumdrive+Pocket+Washing Machine = bad

My brother needs this. So far he has managed to 1) drop a cell phone in the pool. 2) wash 2 ipods (within weeks of eachother) 3) drop another cell phone in the toilet. This technology would have saved him hundreds of dollars.

Guys, he's just having a bad day -- cut him some slack.

Fuzzy, here's an eTissue.

My cell phone regularly has close calls with the toilet, usually when I'm in the shower; my toddler can open doors

Anyone in/went to college knows how commonly cell phones are dropped into cups of beer. Usually all you have to do is turn off the phone, remove the battery, and blow-dry everything for awhile. Should be good to go.

Can't wait to see the new prices though.

Now you can make cell calls while underwater!

I went water skiing once with a guy who left his cell in his swiming trunks. His new cell phone >_<. Thank Google these scientists are discovering new ways to protect consumers from themselves.

i've had a cell phone ruined by mt. dew. i think this tech will definitely come in handy for many.

@Fuzzy Logik: did you need help getting that stick that far up your ass?

Hehehe thats why I have mine attached to my keys :D

I would love to spray(?) my camera with this, as I've taken it to the beach a few times and would hate to have it fall in the water. One of the beaches we went to we had to cross the water to get to the beach/sand side, and while it was only a few feet deep, the bottom was rocky and slippery.

I want an underwater laptop that I can play with in the swimming pool. I think this is a GREAT idea.

this is old news to us brits
BBC news reported this a couple of years ago. Last I heard they were pushing this into public-domain so they could get manu-base up for military use as well

He's got a point.

What? You don't sit in the pool on a float catching rays and wishing you could be surfing the net while you drink your glass of iced tea? I'd be all about that. Take my laptop, my glass of tea, and my giant alligator floaty and chill in the pool while typing this stuff and catching some rays in the process.

Coming from the NVM spammer in the Crysis patch thread, your opinion does not mean much around here. Sry.:rolleyes::D

Hey that was only once okay, once!

omg I started cracking up, thanks for the laugh :D

I don't know about the rest of you, but I say about fucking time they start thinking about waterproofing. My hearing aids are sensitive to humidity and goes haywire with the slightest drop of water, yes, including sweats.

I find it astounding hearing aid manufacturers having come up with a way of waterproofing the fucking things. Watches and cameras are waterproof for crissakes!

well... this will not be a spray-on... the way this is applied is inside of a closed container filled with gas and powerful electrodes...

This is actually the same plasma that they are working on making forcefields out of... but that requires a permanently electrified state and so far they're only able to get a window the size of one port-hole stable because of the amount of juice needed..

Jeezus H. Tap dancing titty fuckin christ.
BOUT FUCKING TIME. I don't expect a cell phone or any electronics to be completely waterproof, but my cell phone should atleast survive the sweat from my brow after I've been making phone sex calls all night. Can't tell you how many times that has happened...

;)

Is this guy for real? Man, even the lack of respect or intelligence in adults in this society is continuing to go downhill... and "e-balls" continue to get bigger.

LOL. Actually, most toys are already made to get wet ;).

I'm sure the use for waterproofing some, especially small and portable, electronics could really come in handy. Cell phones, flash drives etc.

As a hardcore gamer, I know my keyboards would friggin' appreciate it, LOL! :D I'm usually very careful, but during the heat of a few different FPS titles, I've accidentally knocked over everything from water, to Coke to wine on my Saiteks :p

Are you being serious? "e-balls" LMAO

It's "e-penis".

Did you have candles lit with that wine/FPS session? :D

Oh, I'm sorry, I stand corrected on my understanding of "e-genitals" ;) ...LOL :D

No, seriously, I prefer "e-balls"; has a little more impact. But I swear, if you say anything about me "prefering balls"... LOL ;)

The word "penis", also just has always sounded friggin' retarded to me, even as a kid. My wife and I are always cracking jokes about stupid words like like... "penis"... :D

Seriously, though... too many people let their balls get too big from behind a screen. Not only was that inaccurate (statement about sounding as if there is no thought behind his posts) but it was unnecessarily rude, whether he's having a "bad day" or not.

Either way, I posted my response about the actual point of this thread, so I wont go on anymore about that nonsense.

LMAO! Yes, it was FPS by candlelight and nice soothing classical music in the background and heads exploded in F.E.A.R. Ah, the catharsis... LOL :D

I gave up on the harder liquor years ago, and even steer clear of ale but damn, I miss it) for various health reasons. But I'm also Italian, so wine is in my blood... or is my blood... however you want to look at it ;)

It would be cool if it could be used for immersion cooling. One of the things I hate about water cooling is all the blocks. You remove a fan and put a block on one thing and something else next to it gets deprived of air and then it needs a block. They've got blocks for cpu, graphics, chipset, vrm's, each ddr2 stick, HD, etc but that gets expensive.

It would be much more eloquent to just submerge the whole motherboard and parts into water. Flournert is like $500/gallon and evaporates. Epoxy is too permanent. Oil is messy and isn't very good at heat transfer. Water would be great if the underlying electronics could be made waterproof.

While I don't think anything could be waterproofed to that degree at this point in time, that is indeed an excellent concept. An entire system filled with water, and water kept as specific temps through cooling. Futurist ;)

Of course, then everything would have to be rust-proof, which would be a little difficult since the only metal that doesn't rust is surgical steel.

But, if ever possible, then the only thing you'd have to worry about is your system dumping an ass-load of water all over your carpet ;)
