I don't know much about hardware PhysX rendering other than there aren't a lot of games utilizing it.

But I have an EVGA 8800GTS 640MB sitting on a desk that was in my machine two upgrades ago. If I throw this in one of my x16 slots can it be used for PhysX processing? Would it be worth the effort and more importantly, the power usage?

To answer your questions:

Yes you can use it as a secondary card for PhysX processing, you will need some driver hacks or something though to work with your AMD card, I'm sure someone will post a tutorial.
Sure it might be worth the effort if you plan on playing the handfull bunch of games that benefit from it, Mirrors Edge, Batman AA etc.
Is it worth the power usage? That one is up to you.

Thanks for the reply.

The only game I could really see myself installing to try PhysX would probably be Mirror's Edge at the moment.

Do you think my PSU could handle the extra load? I remember the 8800GTS being a power-hungry beast. It's the reference cooler design, if that matters.

You should be okay power wise, that being said for you I don't think it's worth the effort to get slightly better quality in Mirrors Edge.

It's a waste of both your time and power if you're not really going to use it.

Not to hyjack the thread but i have a similar question about physx. I own a motherboard with an onboard nvidia vga. I use a amd 6850 vga card though.

Physx was auto installed on my PC... is that being run from the MB onboard nvidia vga?

edit: wrong MB name same question

i also have a physx question. I have a rig using one single 8800GT 512. im wondering this. I know the 8800gt is a lower end card but can it still be used for physx really?

also in the Nvidia settings for Physx there are 3 options, Auto, GPU and CPU. shold I keep it on Auto or GPU or does it not make a difference.

Any 8 Series or newer card with 32+ shader cores can be used as a Physx co-processor. It takes a bit more effort to get them working along side AMD cards.

If the gap in speed between your main card and your second physx card is too great, it may actually give you slower performance then if you were to use just the single card. (how this is with AMD cards I don't know)

If you have both cards already, there really isn't any reason to not try it out. Install the latest drivers and then put your extra video card in a PCI-E slot.

Yes to the OP and the hijacker your GPUs can both be used for PhysX. To run an AMD master and nVidia slave you need PhysX mod. Google it. I don't know what driver it goes up to now but I have one on my backup programs that supports ForceWare up to 257.xx. YMMV

Your GPU run PhysX well, but to maximize physics performance a GTX 275 is slowest card that will maximize PhysX performance. If you use your current GPU it should perform a hair less than the 9800 GTX in this review.
