School me on fans

So this isn't really for a PC rig, it is for my x360 slim. The console runs hot as hell playing Forza4 and after some research I could swap out the 80mm fan inside, but it does a fine job blowing out hot air.
Now if i was to add another fan on top of the case, say a 120mm fan to help pull the air out, would a low noise (lesser cfm) fan help extract air out? Or at the very least get something that is close to the internal 80mm fans specs?
I do plan on using a bigger 120mm fan, just want to use something that doesn't generate as much noise.

Any help/insight would be appreciated! :p

I'm not entirely sure how the xbox is setup or exactly what you're asking but what about having a fan thats pulling fresh air in and leaving the 80mm fan blowing out?

Don't they make external fan attachments for all the 360s?

Without having a 360/case apart to look at it's kind of hard to tell what the best approach would be. Obviously you'll want the air flowing across all the hot components, then outside someway. I'd think placing a 120mm fan on the front side (would have to take it apart to see which side) to blow cool air in, letting the 80mm fan suck it out. Though upgrading that 80mm fan to something better would probably be a help as well, I doubt the stock fan is all that great.

This might have been better in the cooling section, however I spotted this and thought I would reply.

The coolers that go on the back where the stock fans are can be pointless, depending on the rev. most of the fans are delta I believe, and its doubtful you will find a direct replacement that's any good at all. The ones that go on the back still have to pull through the same fans and as such will always be fighting each other as well as adding restriction and more air turbulence.

Adding a 120mm fan to the side of the unit to force cool air in will be helpful and should keep the stock fans from spinning up so high. But this would involve cutting the side to mount to the fan. You could also give the Thermalright HS a go if you are really wanting to drop down noise.

The fan to add for this kind of set up, with a tightly packed case and the like, a GT AP-13 or AP-14 would be the choice depending on how much noise you can put up with.

I took my x360 apart and drilled holes into the shell to mount a 120mm fan, I think the fan I got was too slow, dont feel as much air pressure coming out of the 120mm, compared to the 80mm fan inside the case. I cut a usb cord and the fan's wires and hooked them up to power the fan via usb.

Kingwin duro bearing fan 500-1200rpm (74.5 CFM). Does anyone know what speed the fan runs if its powered through usb?

Maybe since the 120mm fan is bigger the air is more evenly distributed, so I don't feel much air?

Thanks for the insight guys, now I need to wire in a speed controller I guess and run the fan faster. Its pretty damn quiet right now. Also does anyone know if there is an internal temp monitor for the x360 slim?

USB is only 5v, that fan is 12v. Therefore you're running that fan at less than have of what it's rated at. If 1200 RPM is at 12v, then it's running at 500 RPMs which is the slowest setting.

Also the fan appears to be sucking air out of the 360, instead of blowing air in.

x360 slims do not have intake fans, I installed this fan in hopes of helping the 80mm internal fan exhaust the hot air out.

And yea not shit I need more voltage! LOL, it even says on the box 12v, but that should be general knowledge. Imma NOOB!

Anybody have suggestions on what I can do?

Cheap 12v "wall wart" transformer is probably your best bet. Look around, I bet you already have one sitting in a drawer from years ago cause you "can't remember what it's to but it might be important" -- or maybe that's just me.

Positive pressure will help expel the air out as well. More intake than exhaust. What's the voltage on that 80mm fan? You could probably splice into it if it's 12v already. If not, search the motherboard for a 12v connection, then ground the other side somewhere.

There is a 12 volt lead on the optical drive. I have used that to power fans on some modded xBoxes.

You are not helping the stock fans "exhaust" anything. The stock fans pull through a shroud system over the HS's, and once the air is pulled through them its hot and gets exhausted out, but putting the 120mm fan as exhaust you are fighting them and making the work harder for the stock fans, you are also short circuiting the airflow of cool outside air from the side as the 120mm fan is right next to the side also, any fans added should be intake unless you are replacing the stock fans.

you sure about that? The stock internal fan PUSHES hot air out of the case. It is the only fan on the x360 slim. If putting another fan doesn't work to pull air out faster, why are there companies that have made exhaust fans for the slim? There are youtube videos showing a temp drop using the xcm wing for the slim.

I looked up my other options, and somebody found a 12v source in the bottom of the mobo, would it be better to use that or the power from the optical drive?

Ah, the slim, didn't see that, yes, the slim still pulls, but exhausts from the side rather than the back. The stock fan if I remember is 92mm with 80mm mounts, so 80mm would not be the best as you would be getting less blade area. But to fit a 92mm would need moding or zip ties. Good thing is I believe stock is PWM, if it was me I would buy a 92mm GT and find a way to mount it, however you lose PWM with it. There are 92mm fans with 80mm mounts but they tend to be cheaper crappy aftermarket fans.

Have you modded a x360 slim going through the 12v connection right next to the power plug? And would it be safe enough to run a 120mm fan?

Every 12v mod I see are just led lights on xboxes.

As long as its a 12v source, the fan will only draw what it needs which isn't much.

SO i just decided to just go the alternate power route, I bought the last one of these at my local frys: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Raidmax-Molex-Adapter/16318477?wmlspartner=neQRQBqOKtQ&sourceid=40140436521842974061&sourceid=0100000012230215302434&veh=aff
It was a price reduced item, and came in a crappy bag, seems like it was bought, returned, neglected and stayed that way for probably a couple of years. I got it for $7.19.

Its an adapter that outputs at 12v with 2 molex connections, and 2 other connections that out put at 3v. I cut both of the 3v wires out and now left with 2 molex.
One is connected to the 120mm fan on top so its finally spinning at 2000rpm, and I must say I didn't do much research on fans, but this Kingwin is a bad ass fan, pretty good CFM @ 74.50, all while maintaining low noise (19.7dba).
I plan to use the other molex for an intake fan on the side that the hard drive is on, but aimed at the grill area where the HSF is.

With the 120mm fan alone it is doing a splendid job, the box isn't warm anywhere (maybe because its nice and cool in the mornings here in Silicon Valley?) But once I add an intake fan with decent CFM for its size (10+), I'll be happy and not worried about the x360 slim getting hot at all!

Don't go off of the mfg listed ratings, they are nothing but fluff, that fan does not put out anywhere near 74CFM @ 19dbA, as a matter of fact ANY fan at 2k rpm will not be 19dbA. It's just not going to happen, 74CFM, the air turbulence alone, assuming the fan it self and motor are 100% quiet (not going to happen), would still be over 19dbA.

Also, make sure you check the mah rating of that adapter, most of those are 500mah max and most 2k rpm fans will already be close to or over that, add more to that and you might have a fire on your hands.
