So this is my first time water cooling so I have no idea if a pump should make these sounds. When I first got the pump it make a squeaky sound just rotating it by hand. I tightened the pump on to the res and hooked everything up. Pump and res is here. Upon turning on the power to pump it made some crazy squealing sounds for about 10 seconds, like cats screeching, like a bad bearing sound. It stopped and is silent now once all the air got out. I took it apart and just turned it by hand again it isn't squeaky anymore. Is there something wrong with this pump or is that normal?

Also if this is normal did I ruin the pump by allowing to run for 10 seconds like that?

Did you turn the pump on without air ?

No a screech is not normal for a D5, is it functioning correctly right now ?

Edit: oh and congrats on jumping into WC .... shit is addicting , hope your wallet is locked up, its worse than folding

when you say without air do you mean without water? The res wasn't all the way full when I turned it on, I did fill it up while it was running. It seems to be working perfectly now and silent. I'm just worried that something is actually a miss with this pump and that I should get it exchanged.

lol, nice catch :) Yes without water ;)

I would keep an eye on it, watch your flow rate, your temps, etc. and res. levels. See if anything seems low or wrong.

You can pull the rotor off and check the bearing, it is white ceramic material and if it is burnt or has damage there might be an issue. It probably just had no water to lubricate it, if it got quiet and doesn't vibrate like crazy it will most likely be fine, they can withstand a few seconds of dry operation.

Does it hum noticeably at the highest speed? My old one did and died after a year of use. My new replacement is completely silent. My old made a lot of noises getting water into the loop. My replacement... also silent getting water into the loop but maybe it's just my experience.

If you hear sounds like something being "drilled" in there, something is going and you need to get it replaced. If not, then enjoy it. My old one was fine until I decided to take apart the loop, fill it back up, and then it just went during that process. I assume if I had left it alone it would have been fine for some time longer.

Well the warranty has already been voided by you, so I would just use it, not take it apart if it works. Use a program that will shut down your comp if certain CPU temps are reached just in case. No point in wasting a couple hours taking that shit apart.

D5's are pretty stout, 10 seconds dry probably didn't do anything. Maybe it just had some piece of plastic or some crap left over from manufacturing in there. Mine has been running for well over 7 years and it had a high pitched whine that I masked by covering it in closed cell foam years ago. Good decision on the D5, I remember when everyone was switching to those DDC pumps, but they would end up having to air cool their pumps. I'd pick reliability any day and the D5 has that.

I wouldnt worry, it looks like your bearing and spindle are on the edge of tight tolerances.
As long as its ok when water is in the system, you are good.

I'd do a water change and flush after a few weeks/1 month in case there are any excess ceramic particles from the initial wear.
Then if anything, it should last longer because you will have a good fit between the bearing and spindle with reduced chance of rattle developing early.
