Scanning desktop's HD using my netbook?

So I managed to pick up some nasty infection on my desktop. I used the Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper which caught Smadow and Alureon by booting from USB. Except now my computer won't boot from USB anymore, for some reason the BIOS is no longer detecting it and offering it as a boot option. I'm not sure whether that's the infection or just something wrong with the hardware; my USB keyboard will work in XP but it's no longer detecting either to get myself into the BIOS screen. Portable SAS get's killed when it attempts to scan.

Anyways, I'm at the point where I'm ready to take out the hard drive and scan it using my netbook via an external hard drive enclosure. I'm like 99.9% sure that it's a good idea but catching this thing has made me gun-shy. Any thoughts ? Like could I could I put my netbook at risk doing this? It's a ASUS EEE 1000HE.

install MSE, malwarebytes and spybot S^D along with hijac this, then connect it, but boot into safe mode.. i think it will show the drive....
 
Hey thanks for the replies! I decided to keep fiddling because I couldn't realistically get my hands on an external enclosure the weekend.

TDSSKiller did find the infection but the system would hang on the shutting down phase of the reboot.

Give another point to ComboFix, it got my machine running again and now I'm running MBAM and SAS; which are finding cleaning the infection out of the lesser used areas of the HD. Have to reinstall MSE; it's somehow got permanently disabled so XP keeps thinking I don't have enough privileges to run it.

My sisters nettop got Smadow and what a total bitch of a virus it is! It somehow disabled MBAM as it will shutdown midscan and when I go to manually run mbam.exe it says invalid path or something like that. MSSE does find it but even after it says it has cleaned it and restarted the nettop, it finds it again. I even tried renaming mbam and msse but that didnt work either. Will give ComboFix a try.
