I have recently ordered a multi function laser printer from Brother. MFC 9149CDW. Which is a printer, scanner, photocopier and fax.

Now my dad has a bunch of several books. Most of his books are documents binded in the form of books. Dad's office is full of this kind of junk. I want to scan this junk, store it in PDF files, so that dad can read it in iPad iBook application.

Now the printer that I have ordered has SEEMS to have an automatic document feeder for scanning purpose.

Is it possible, that I can I dis assemble my dad's books, put it in scanner and it will automatic feed and scan pages (duplex) one by one and save those scanned pages, use the OCR and save those pages in PDF format?

I couldn't find any information on your particular multifunction printer (MFP), so I can't tell you whether or not it has automatic duplex scanning from its auto document feeder (ADF). Assuming that the ADF can duplex scan, and you have either Adobe Acrobat (not Reader) or another PDF program that offers OCR, then yes, you could use the MFP to scan your father's books into PDF.

I have question for you: Do you really want to destroy all of those books? Once you've disassembled them, you won't be able to reassemble them.

You should check out DIY Book Scanner for different ways to scan all of those books.

No I will not destroy those books, Like I said earlier, that most of those books are documents and pages that are binded in the form of books. So after scanning I will unbind it. But my dad's office is a small room of my house, dedicated with his office work. It is a big junk. filled with books, papers, and files. I want to computerize all this, so that dad's burden is reduced, and once dad is done with reading, he will not need those documents again, so mom is going to put it into waste paper. I don't believe in destroying books, I will most likely donate it to someone who needs it or sell it in old book section.

The only thing they didn't mention is automatic duplex scanning.
 
It's best to assume that the ADF doesn't support duplex scanning.

That sucks, because now you'll have to buy a desktop document scanner like the Fujitsu ScanSnap to achieve what you were trying to do with your MFP. Do you want to spend money on a dedicated scanner?

No ways, I have already spend a lot of money for MFP, to fullfill most of my dad's needs.

Scanning all these books is a one time work. If duplex scanning isn't possible, then I have to pay someone and get the books scanned.
 
Could you reconfirm the model number of your MFP?

I went to Brother's international site and there was no mention of your printer. It's as if the printer never existed.

Looking at the model number, the closest I could get to your printer is the MFC-9130CW.

My dealers provided me this model number that is 9140CDW. But you are right not available in the local website of brother. I will call my dealer and reconfirm agian. But looks like you are right 9130 could be the model # which has 9140 as the international variant.

Based on your link, it appears that your printer doesn't support duplex scanning via the ADF.

In case of manual duplex scanning, does these softwares have the options where lets say I am scanning 500 pages from both the side, so i put all the odd pages under scanning and then even pages, will the software automatically merge these pages, OCR it and save it in PDF format?

No scanning, PDF, or OCR software that I know of is capable of "auto-merging" manual scans. The software will "clean up" (for lack of a better term) the pages in the order they are scanned in.
 
Why do you need to OCR the documents, anyway? I scan documents to PDF constantly, sometimes many pages, and have never felt the need for OCR. I'm just curious, as we've had a couple threads about this.

You have to consider time to scan all this stuff. If these are just plastic spiral bound or 3-ring binders, you might be better off just taking them to a copy shop. The multi-function units we have at work will duplex scan directly to PDF many more pages per minute than any SOHO all-in-one. The quality is also very good on our newer units.

The reason I need to OCR it is, so that when dad reads it in his iPad, he can bookmark the text, which is not possible of it is scanned in the form of image. What units are you talking about? Can you provide me model #?
