scanner not working in win 8

My friend has a Canonscan Lide 110 which isn't working in windows 8. It worked fine in win 7. I installed the drivers and when I ran the MP Navigator EX it acts like it isn't plugged in / doesn't recognize the scanner. I don't use win 8, but when I was fiddling around somewhere (i think it was in the control panel) i was able to do a test scan and it worked there. Of course there is no control over anything like cropping and scanning a specific area. So it seems the drivers are fine but the canon software doesn't work well with win 8. Is there any other software that I can use with the scanner? Any ideas will be helpful.
