Anyone know when the sb710 chipsets are going to come out?
I was planning to get a new mobo, a amd x2 5000be or a x4 9850, but still waiting for the sb710 chipsets to come out with its overdrive 3.0 support....so has anyone heard anything?
 
This is a very good question. The latest I had heard was that AMD decided to skip the SB710 in favor of the SB750. We'll probably see it around June or July. Apparently the new SB750 is able to unlock extra speed from current Phenoms. Maybe it makes its debut alongside the 45nm Deneb. I get the feeling AMD is working hard with a back-to-school mid/late-summer timeframe in mind.
 
BTW, the SB750 will not only fix the SB700 internal clock generator problem, but also add RAID 5 and OverDrive 3.0 support.
 
I've been waiting for the SB7xx. If price is right on a mobo($150ish) I'll go back to AMD for curiosity's sake.
 
You are still going to pay a good price for a decent board but not the $300+ that the decent Intels are going for. I don't blame you though as I don't like paying over $100-$150 for a board or processor. It may be earlier but I'd say a month or so, probably around Computex for the relaunch. If you plan on overclocking/upgrading make sure the board has at least four phase VRM/power management. It will/should not matter as much when the 45nm are released though. I've got the 5400+ which doesn't come with the fan and is OEM but is sitting at 3.3 easily. I've got the SB600 and it's doing quite fine with four WD1600AAJS drives on my EPoX AD580XR.
 
I recently read that the SB750 launch indeed has been delayed till late June - early July. Any boards being displayed at Computex 2008 temporarily will have SB700s instead.

Unexpected advantages
AMD might be struggling a bit when it comes to the clock speed of its processors at the moment, nor are they great overclockers, but AMD has managed to conjure up some magic in its upcoming SB750 Southbridge which should help them when it comes to overclocking.

We reported about AMD's upcoming range of Southbridges back in January, but it looks like AMD decided to ditch the SB710 and integrate those features into the SB750, or more precisely the OverDrive 3.0, which we weren't quite sure what it was all about back then, apart from the fact that it had something to do with overclocking.

However, it turns out it wasn't in the way we thought, at least not if our source is correct, as it turns out the the secret here has something to do with this new Southbridge being able to unlock some extra overclocking potential in AMD's CPUs.

From what we've been told, AMD demoed a board with the SB750, which struggled to overlock the CPU to 3GHz, but once the overclocking feature was enabled the same CPU had no problem reaching 3.2GHz. We can't reveal exactly how this feature was enabled, as our source asked us not to, but it looks like AMD has a secret weapon when it comes to overclocking its CPUs here.

Now it's just a matter of waiting for this new Southbridge to become available and to see how well this works on production motherboards, We can only hope it will be even better than on the reference board.

sorry to revive an old thread but I just found a new motherboard that has the SB710 southbridge. Its on newegg. does the SB710 support the overclocking of the phenoms like the SB750 does? anyone know that?

edit: just zoomed in on the box on the newegg pics and noticed it says designed for low power cpu's under 95W. So maybe not great for overclocking, but am curious what the Sb710 offers in general, because if more boards came out with it and it offered the overclocking ability on phenoms like the SB750 does it might provide a few more options.
