OK, so I have an old SB live card that I dont use anymore, and my sister's old sound card (ISA - yes, ISA) has died. I took out the old ISA soundcard, and put in the PCI SB Live card. Win2k locks up during boot. I reinstall windows, locks during hardware detection. Take out SBL card, works fine. I'm pretty sure the card isnt defective, it used to work fine, and I dont think it went bad sitting in the closet for 3 months. Anyone ever seen this problem before? In safe mode everything boots up fine w/ the sound card in.

Some mother boards have trouble with sblive cards Before I upgraded a few years back I had an pc100 mother board that when I put in sblive card It would whine and lock up when windows loaded I'd try an cheap 10.oo card like an old 16 bit ensoniq card which is an pci card. Try the for sale or trade forum you could trade for one an make some money one your old card to boot.

Is the PCI you are installing the card in being shared with any other devices?
The Live cards are resource hogs and don't like to play nice when they have to share anything (be it IRQs or memory space).
Try the card in a different system to rule out that it is bad. At least see if it allows a system to start searching for the drivers for it.
The only problem I actually had an IRQ problem is on a system from old parts I was building. Went to transfer files to it through the network and the transfer would lockup after a few MB transfered. Dont remember if the comp locked up. Eventually switched the net card to a different PCI slot to the one above the WOL connector on the board [Abit KT7A-R] and it works like a gem again. Just wish the vid card fan wasn't on it's last leg.
