SB Live! 5.1: Performance Bottleneck?

I have a serviceable computer, but can't help but to wonder: could using a 5 year-old sound card bork my system's performance? My card is a SoundBlaster Live! 5.1, and although it was good back then, it seems that games today are requiring more voices and more powerful DSPs.

Would upgrading to the new X-Fi, or even an Audigy series card, cause a noticeable change in my framerates?
 
At the very least, it would no more hinder your performance than using any non-creative card, which many people do. The SB Live should at least be able to support EAX1, which is something... As far as performance goes, you're talking about a few % at most. What you are missing, if anything, are surround effects specific to the higher EAX levels in game that support it.
 
It won't bork it too much. The SBLive as far back as the original supported EAX2 through hardware. I'm not sure about the newer SB Live series though. Most cards that are non creative should support at least EAX2.0 either hardware or software.

So I doubt you'll notice the difference in framerate, but sound quality, is another difference like Mister X said. :)
