So when I install the card...and start up the comp...it doesn't boot because suddenly it can't detect the hard drives...

When the card isn't it, I have no problems. Any ideas? Is this a power issue or some sort of hardware compatibility problem?
 
You have alot of high wattage parts and this may be a longshot but maybe your PSU? If not try a different PCI slot.
 
Is it not detecting the hard drives while booting or when you go into the BIOS setup does it not detect the hard drives?
 
Sounds like an IRQ conflict. Try installing the soundcard into a different PCI slot.
