Saving files from dying MBP

I have a 2008 MBP that is biting the dust. I have a dead nvidia 8600 GPU so I can't get any display. The HD is fine, but the graphics are not.

Before I take it to the store and explore possible repairs (if any, wouldn't be surprised if it's time to buy a new MBP) I want to try to retrieve the data off the HD.

With that, can I take out the HD, put it into an external enclosure and retrieve files from another mac? Can I retrieve them with a PC?

I'm not touching it until I confirm my strategy :)

Thanks guys.

I tried that but no good. I think the problem is pretty deeply rooted and won't even boot so pressing T does nothing. The system simply powers on. This vid shows the exact problem I have:

Found a thread on the apple forum earlier and it didn't sound good :(

Anyways, going with the external enclosure.

Pull drive, recover data, reinsert drive, take to apple store and ask to be sent off to repair facility.

yes, you can put it into enclosure.

On mac thats all you need.
for windows you will need to give it a way to read HFS format drives.

You can either find drivers to give your windows native ability to read HFS drives, or use some program. I've used this program sucessfully before: http://www.catacombae.org/hfsx.html
