Satellite through Internet

Hello everyone, I have a somewhat odd question. My mother wants satellite for some of the foreign channels but her apartment complex won't allow her to have one because they have a contract with the local cable company. We don't have a private area, like a balcony, where we could legally put a dish. So I was wondering if it is possible for me to place the dish at my apartment, connect it to my pc and stream the signal through the internet to my mom's pc and then to a satellite receiver. Any ideas on how this can be done? Thank you.

The law may vary from state to state but last i read an apartment building or condo complex cannot stop you from obtaining satellite TV. Maybe do the research on your mother's behalf and check out how the laws work in your state. You may be able to get some info from the satellite provider you had in mind since i'm sure they deal with this BS all the time. Who knows, the satellite provider may even make some phone calls to the landlord/management agency on your behalf.

As for your original idea, i'm not sure if it will work, or if it'll perform as expected, couldn't hurt to research, but personally i wouldn't ask the satellite provider about it

The last few buildings I've lived in in LA all claim to have the same restrictions for the same reason. Usually the deal is the old cable companies paid to have the building wired for cable and in exchange the management agreed to prohibit dishes for 10 years or so.

Bottom line is they own the building and if they want to prohibit dishes on the roof, for any reason, they can.

That said, although it doesn't effect you, you CAN put a dish up in any private area you pay rent for, like balconies or your bedroom window. It just can't hang outside your 'property'.

None of that answers your question =) I think you could get a sling box, hook your dish to it, and stream it to a computer connected to her TV. I've never used it but I think control of the channel changing is possible.

I had sort of the same question (I wanted to be able to access my TV and movies while I travel for work). Someone pointed me to this www.orb.com. It's works great for me and it's free! On a side note - anyone in the New England area wanna install this and let me stream to their TV on Sundays? I'd love to watch the Patriots I'll send you the local ballgames from down here (usually, New Orleans, Atlanta, Miami and Tennessee).

That be useful if I was located in a area where I can point my dish and not hit the building.

Thanks for the replies everyone. My mother decided to just put the dish up on a pole in a bucket of cement. That way we can move it if needed. The property managers don't seem to really care; it's more like they just can't say yes legally, so they may just turn a blind eye to the whole thing. I'll look into the other options just in case.
