Satellite access card question

I just purchased a Sony A-50 receiver to replace my old one since it is compatible with Snapstream's BeyondTV4.4... when i removed the access card from the old receiver and put it in the Sony, it would not recognize the access card and displayed "invalid access card" on screen. replaced the card in the original receiver and all was well. access card should be universal right? the Sony was used when i bought it, so i may need to check solder joints and such because the rear of the unit appears damaged (where the access card is inserted).

in a nutshell... will the access card work in any (working) receiver? the answer to this question will tell me if the receiver is broken or if i need another access card for the Sony.
 
No, access cards are not univeral. You will need to call your satellite provider and they will send you a fresh one for your new box. The box is probably fine since it is recognizing there is a card in it reading "Invalid Access card".

that is the way I understand it as well. I have 4 identical model boxes and the install tech told me not to mix the cards or I would have to call DirecTV.
 
Yeah cards get assigned to 1 reciever and 1 reciever only when they are first inserted into the box. DTV usually charges like $20 for a new card when you buy a new reciever but they usually end up waiving that fee if you ask.
