Wanna know if SATA2 hd can be used with SATA1 controller ?

My boot drive seems to have problem, and I really have to buy a new one in 24 hours. I have lots of works to do , and I don't have time for research.

Is SATA driver as reliable as PATA ? Any serious issue why I have to stay with PATA ?

Looking at Seagate 200-250GB SATA2 with 8MB cache. Does Seagate also have 200-250GB version with only 2MB cache ?

What is 7200.7 , 7200.8, 7200.9 ? What difference ?
NCQ, any PATA or SATA drives from Seagate that supports NCQ ?

There should be no compatibility problems. I've heard reports of having to set sata2(.5) controllers to sata1 speeds in order to get things to work, but nothing vice versa.

Using a 2MB cache drive as a boot drive will be pretty slow. You probably want to stick with an 8MB drive, or even a 16MB if the prices are close. The 7200.7s or .9s are probably best for booting from; the .8s lost a lot of ground on seek times and don't have the improved STR of the .9s to make up the difference.

BTW, the Western Digital 2500KS is almost exactly the same price, and a much faster drive. Might consider that ;)
