SATA vs PATA

I'm currently working on a rig and am trying to decide on a hard drive(s).

Does it make sense to grab a SATA 7200 first for the O/S and programs, then buy an 7200 IDE PATA for storage? Or should I just grab a couple of PATAs?

Also you can run a single SATA without a problem correct, or do you need 2 to put them in a RAID?

Why get any PATA drives at all? If you've got SATA ports, get SATA drives. Much less cabling hassel
 
i would leave PATA to ODD's since its hard to find any that use SATA only, all HDD;s should be on SATA, you can raid whatever the hell you want but its recommended that you have 2 exact drives for raid. you can actually raid a single drive (make 2 partitions and stripe them with windows 2003 server) lol
 
yeah now days if your getting new drives I would go all SATA if you have it. the performance on SATA is a little better, and cost about the same now...
 
I think the one of the few advantages of having PATA over SATA is that up until very recently, motherboards with built in SATA ports use an embedded controller that works thru the PCI bus. That means you have to install a driver for the card when you install Windows. If you dont have the driver disk, it can be a pain.
