ok i have a 250 gig sata that i installed my os (windows x64) and got it installed and setup and got some software and stuff and been running goodfor 2 weeks.
now i just picked up a 2nd sata 300gb and wanted to raid them.
if i do this do i need to start from scratch? i dont really wanna looser 2 weeks of software installs.
and how would i set up a software raid. is software raid any good?

i want my system to be as fast as possible

current setup is
2X xeon 3.6 2mb L2 @ 800mhz 2 gig ram dvdrw and cdrw and 250gig sata with os installed on it
300gig sata nothing on it
 
Software raid isnt good, especially if you want fast as possible. Just run the drives seperately and be happy with it. Raid-0 wont get you much (and youll lose 50gig of the 300 and have to reinstall everything) and Raid-1 will cost you 300gig but youll have nice data integrity lol. Just keep the OS/programs on the 250 and your data on the 300.

Software raid = shit

So yer, keep it simple, keep it seperate, keep it real :)
 
Even beyond what ZOMGWTFBBQ said. It's typically a bad idea to raid drives of different models/sizes/brands together. It has been known to cause all sorts of headaches performance wise.
 
Unless your doing some massive disc access on your system, the difference between a hardware card and software raid won't really be that noticeable. You might want to read the sticky in the harddrive forums about raid. It may sway you to go another way with your drives.
 
well i deal with large video files, 300mb to 4gb on average so i think it might benifit me to have this setup,
also do some 3d stuff with high file sizes. mostly its all video related

Software raid uses the CPU, it's true, but the amount of CPU used to process a few hundred MB/s is almost nothing. Writing to my raid 5 array takes about 1% CPU at 40 MB/s, and that's because it gets rounded up. The system could handle 2 GB/s of writes, and it's a lowly p3-933. I'd suggest trying software raid, at least; if you don't like it you can always recreate the array.

 
what if i took my os and put it on the 300 gig hd in a partition so the leftover space matches the other 250 gig hd's space. and raid them. im kind anew to how raid works. will it take all my data and split it between both drives? or will it only do that to the new data saved on it after i set the raid up.

i think my xeon and ram is plently fast enough to handle the raid
 
Raid together only drives of the same size (and preferrably the same manufacturer, model, buffer size, etc...). You'll end up with a single large volume.

Your best strategy is probably to set up an array of 300gb drives in raid 5 with software, and use the 250 as a boot drive.
