SATA problems

Hey guys I am rebuilding an old box I got from a friend of mine and trying to get it set up for my girlfriend.

I have a 500gb SATA drive as well as a 1000gb SATA drive, it seems the motherboard in this box (HP M2N68-LA) has SATA support, but I can't seem to get it to recognize the drives.

I can supply more information if needed, any ideas? Thanks!

That's an older chipset. You may need to jumper the SATA drive to run them at a slower transfer speed. I had a problem earlier this year with a VIA chipset that was super specific about the drives it could use. They couldn't be over 1TB, they couldn't run at 6.0Gbps even though the drive should auto-detect legacy boards and run in compatibility mode... they couldn't spin faster than 5400RPM... I finally found a "green" laptop drive from seagate that fit the bill after 6 trips to best buy... yes, i had to use a laptop drive for a desktop computer... they thought I was an idiot for returning so many drives... I thought I was going to go postal. I had to put a jumper on the drive to force it to run in legacy mode (there's usually 3-4 pins that can be put into various jumper configurations for compatibility purposes)... perhaps research your chipset and see if it has similar issues

Actually, come to think of it did that machine come out of an HP? And if so, how many RAM slots does it have in total?

4 RAM slots, and yes it did come out of an HP.

Back to the topic, I got the drives to work, and you were right, I needed to jumper the drives for some reason. I noticed on the drive it said "Green" and did some research and saw that someone mentioned adding a jumper to the drive to make it run in SATA 1 mode?? I'm not very familiar with the newer hard drives considering I took quite the break from the PC world for a while.

^^ bingo, that's exactly what I had to do on the machine I was working on

Some boards don't auto-negotiate transfer type with the drive so it's the user's job to force the drives to run in legacy mode using a jumper. That's actually not an issue with new drives, it's an issue with older boards supporting newer drives :)

Glad you got it fixed!! :D

I just found out 3 minutes ago my buddy has that same board... be aware that the reason I asked if your board had 4 RAM slots is because those boards sometimes lose their ability to detect drives at all. It's a flaw on those boards - I've had to replace about six of them in a year on various customers' machines for that reason. Always AMD x4's with 4 slots of memory out of a silver case with a black shiny front. Hard to forget when it's the same issue for all... let me know if you have any more issues with it, but again I'm glad you got it working!
