do most sata drives let you use a molex connector or not?

i want more hdd space.. but i have a shuttle sn41g2v2 with no sata.. and i have 2 drives in it so no more physical space..

i have a few other computers lying around that don't support over 136gb..

so i was thinking that i could get a cheap sata controller card and a 300gb ish sata drive.. but i don't know if i could physically plug it in..

if so, i would probably get the drive from zipzoomfly since they ship them better than newegg.. what other places should i look into? i got a laptop drive from directron and it was in a small box with peanuts.. so they would probably not be that good either.. zzf doesn't have cheap controller cards, but i would like to order both from the same place to combine shipping, unless the local officemax has them.. which i will check now i guess..
 
Most SATA drives can't be powered off molex connectors, but there are exceptions (like the Raptors). However, you can get converters for very cheap which convert a molex to the SATA power connector. Just try to order them together, cause if you buy an adaptor alone the shipping will be more than the product.
 
Hitachi and WD SATA drives have legacy Molexes. Maxtor, Seagate, and Samsung SATA drives require the new power connector.

There may be Molex to SATA power adapters in your motherboard box.
 
well, i would get eitehr a samsung or seagate.. that's just what i want.. and the funny thing is my shuttle has 2 sata power connectors even though there is no sata on the motherboard.. i could cut them off.. but no.. i will see if i can find them if i wind up doing this...
